S C Pannell Adelaide Hills Syrah
Sourced from a vineyard in Echunga, 410 metres above sea level and just down the road from the first vineyard planted in South Australia. Steve has worked with this vineyard since 2010 and in 2014 won him the Jimmy Watson for the 2013 vintage. The fruit is grown on well-drained, granitic soil, Steves preference for Syrah. This vintage is naturally riper and as with all 2016s, more tannic. Hand-harvested and vinified in small open-top fermenters with 30% whole bunches. Highly perfumed, vibrant and complex with prominent black forest fruits, tapenade, all spice, terracotta, dark cocoa powder and tamarind. The palate of this wine is the most interesting element. The flavours lead you to think that it is quite light, but as you taste the wine, the power and intensity unfurls to reveal a density that carries the palate further.
Mr Riggs Piebald Syrah
This wine, a Piebald, meaning black and white, is a co-fermentation of the blackest Syrah grapes, with a hatful of the purest white Viognier. Deep in colour, the wine is almost black, yet is also vibrant and bright. The nose is perfumed with apricots, spice and liquorice; a pretty, fragrant wine with a sweet juice and velvety palate. The finish is elegant with savoury spice and a fine tannin length and persistence.
Eden Road The Long Road Syrah
Located within Murrumbateman in the now prestigious wine region of Canberra District, comes Eden Road who are well known for cool-climate, elegant style wines. Here their 'The Long Road' Syrah is actually sourced from vineyards that are both within the Canberra District and other nearby regions, like Hilltops. The result is a Syrah that is lifted in both aroma and flavours of ripe red cherries and strawberry. 14 months in older French oak has also provided a subtle savoury note with extreme elegance.
Gilles Robin Cuvee Alberic Bouvet
Some believe Alain Graillot to be the king of Crozes-Hermitage, one of true homes of Syrah/Shiraz in the world. It is wines from Alain that has seen 'Crozes' quickly close the gap in perceived quality between 'Crozes' and Hermitage itself. With this wine and his No 2, he brings his expertise to Australia and more specifically an east facing slope in a Colbinabbin vineyard in Heathcote. Elegant structure, restraint and balance are the hallmarks of this Syrah that shows wild red berries, ink and crushed fresh herbs on the nose with a hint of graphite typical of the region. Textured raspberry and blackberry that is more Pinot Noir than Syrah greets you on the palate along with a sublime ultra-fine tannin structure.
Guigal St Joseph Rouge
This wine by Guigal is produced from grapes from the two estates of Jean-Louis Grippat and Vallouit as well as from grapes and wines purchased in the trade. This Syrah is dark red with violets tints; a powerful nose dominated by red berries and delicate oak aromas and a palate with a powerful attack. Round and supple tannins.
Innocent Bystander Syrah
For lovers of great Australian Shiraz, but with a balanced savoury kick, the Innocent Bystander Syrah is your wine. Made by the crew at Giant Steps in the Yarra Valley, this Syrah (Shiraz) has wonderful redcurrant and cherry fruit flavours with an underlying tone of herbs and savouriness.
Stonecroft Serine Syrah
Aromas and flavours of red berries, cranberries, spices with a hint of pepper and Northern Rhone style violets. The concentrated fruit is balanced by fresh acidity and a long juicy finish.
Alain Graillot Syrocco Syrah
Graillot is arguably one the finest winemakers in the Rhone Crozes-Hermitage region. On a cycling holiday in Morocco, he discovered vineyards along the Atlantic Coast, in the Atlas Mountains. In spite of only 20 hectares of vineyards, it is relatively cool climate thanks to the ocean breezes and an altitude of about 500m. The vines' aged between 10-40 years old. There is no use of herbicide or fungicide treatment to the vineyard. All the work is done by hand, which reduced damage to the grapes and resulting in an elegant yet intensely concentrated Syrah.
Pierre Gaillard Saint Joseph Rouge
Bottled unfiltered, this fragrant Syrah delivers sleek, spice-tinged, wild berry fruit, a gentle tannic structure and a long, bright and flavoursome finish.
Graillot The Graillot Project Syrah No 2 Shiraz
Alain Graillot within the short span of just under 20 years has become royalty in the northern Rhône appellation of Crozes-Hermitage. His wines are sought after the world over and are famous for their concentration, freshness and sheer class. Here he brings his expertise to Australia and the Graillot Syrah No.2. Not a second wine to the Graillot Syrah, but more of a different style. The No 2 is a more generous style, with quite muscular fruit and tannin weight. With 10% new oak employed, the No 2 is fruit-forward and a simply stunning drink today that will also reward the patient cellarer.
