Johanne Pfeiffer and Christian Auricht sought a new life in the Barossa, where they married and raised a family. They brought their traditions with them, including brides wearing black dresses on their wedding day. Sadly, Johanne was widowed in 1860, and this wine is named Black Widow in her honour.

Pinot noir from the cool climate of Tumbarumba is fragrant with red cherries and spice, blended with the ripe blackberry and plum fruit of the Hunter Valley Shiraz. Mourvedre, otherwise known as Monastrell or Mataro, is rarely seen as a straight varietal in Australia. Here, it is most famous as a component of the trinity of Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre (GSM). On its own fully ripened Mourvedre can be a rich and flavoursome red. Around the world straight Mourvedres are gaining an appreciative audience with their distinctive dark fruited meatiness. This wine is a French demonstration of the Mourvedre grape's capabilities. Grown on calcerous soil on the warm Mediterranean coast, the Maison de la Villette Mourvedre immediately impresses with its intensity of colour and dark, spicy fruit aromas. On the palate, it is very long and full-bodied with well-balanced tannins. The finish gives an impression of velvety smoothness. It boasts loads of character and power! Ideal with grilled meats or aged cheese.

Gabriel Meffre winery was established in 1936. It has since won the repuation as one of the best producers in the southern Rhone. Their Ventoux vineyard is located mainly on the sediment left by the seas of the Tertiary period at the base of the limestone massif of Ventoux. The wine is made from grenache and syrah, each component vinified separately before blending, then maturation in vats for 10 months. The result is a wine with a deep red robe and a purple hue. The nose is enticing with hints of ripe red fruits and spices, and the mouth is elegant and round with a spicy finish. This Ventoux, with its spiciness and fruit expression, will pair nicely with charcuterie, a vegetable curry or lamb colombo.

Produced from old hillside vineyards in the Herault valley in the south of France, this polished blend from Paul Mas is smoothly textured on the palate with dark berry and sweet spice flavours. Outstanding value.

One of the very few examples of Carignan produced in Australia. This is the first release of this wine from Hither & Yon and it's really approachable already.Bright purple in the glass. Perfumed nose of black cherry, plum and black pepper. Light to medium weight with a fresh core of fleshy black fruits and tart red berries with good balance of acid and tannin crunch. An excellent young-drinker.

6ft6 Shiraz is a rich, succulent and savoury style of Shiraz. More about finesse and complextity than potency, this red reflects the Moorabool Valley's ability to produce a more refined style than most warmer regions. Unless you have more will power than most, enjoy this Geelong red while young and fresh.
