Alsace is in the far north-eastern corner of France and is noted for its excellent white wines. It is the only AOC region in France that is allowed to produce wines designated by the name of the grape variety from which they are produced. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hugel family gained an enviable reputation for their winegrowing skills and for the meticulous way in which they cultivated their vineyards. While it's typical for one of the wine world's most northern climates to produce vintages of distinct character, the latest stands out, delivering some of the lowest yields in the last 30 years, extremely high acidity levels and healthy fruit harvested at high ripeness levels. The bouquet is very aromatic with white peach, fresh almond, green apple and floral notes. The wine is dry on the palate, fresh and well balanced, with a supple finish.

The back label hints at how winemaker Elena Brooks and the Dandelion crew saved the day, "handpicking selected bunches" (that is, avoiding the rotten ones) of the three varieties for co-fermentation and ultimate success. Grenache is Australias signature grape variety and were slightly obsessed with it. Utilising a range of premium vineyards across The Barossa and McLaren Vale regions of South Australia, Thistledown have crafted a wine that captures all that is good about Grenache. Aromatic, deceptively light but with beautiful wild fruit, and slurpy, supple tannins.

For five centuries, the name Dopff and the majestic medieval town of Riquewihr in Alsace's Upper Rhine, have been inextricable. Since 1574, the Dopffs have dedicated themselves to the art of producing great Alsace wines from vineyards in and around picturesque Riquewihr. The current winemakers at Dopff represent the eleventh generation of the family to cultivate the vine and make wine on their Alsace estate. Dopff have also enjoyed an unbroken trading partnership with Dan Murphys since the mid-1950s. Totally unoaked, to allow the delicacy and freshness of the fruit to shine, the colour is true red-violet robe. The nose is delicate and expressive with notes of red fruit and spices. The palate shows a lovely fruity attack of red berries, and the wine finishes harmoniously with great freshness.

This blend is unbaked which highlights the natural fruity character of the wine. There's lots of spicy cherry notes with blackberry and plum. Serve with slow-roasted pork shoulder and lots of greens. 'The 2011 Torbreck Cuvée Juveniles Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre ($28) from the Barossa Valley provides a fragrant and intense concentration of flavours to match the bibimbap.
