Church Road is one of Hawke's Bay's pioneering wineries, and its McDonald Series wines celebrate one of its original owners from the early 1900s, Tom McDonald, and his entrepreneurial spirit. New for Vintage Cellars, Church Road McDonald Series Pinot Gris is a hedonistic style with its rich perfume and texture and a seductive natural sweetness balanced by a touch of spice on the finish. Appealing ripe pear, peach, rose petal, ginger and warm spice aromas are evident on the nose, complimented by subtle creamy complexity. On the palate the wine is lush and full bodied with a moderate level of sweetness balanced by gentle acidity and a touch of ginger spice on the finish.

A star-bright lemon hue with a hint of pink reflects the ripeness of the fruit. The wine is bursting with aromas and flavours of ripe pear, quince, guava, cinnamon and ginger. It expands on the palate to become mouth-filling and unctuous but its richness is balanced by a refreshing and zesty core of minerality.

Colmar's model for Pinot Gris is the full-bodied French (Alsace) style and this year they nailed it. The season in Orange was perfect allowing them to fully ripen the Pinot Gris in their cool Colmar Estate vineyard while retaining balancing acidity. Their french winemaker Chris Derrez went to town, employing some of the techniques of his homeland. The result is everything we could have hoped for lovely poached pear aromas and a rich but stylish palate with complex flavors and texture. Enjoy now or cellar for 2-3 years.

Finishes dry, clean and tangy. Engaging and moreish, with impressive finesse for this style of wine, and with a good volume of fresh fruit to balance the phenolic and savoury skinsy elements.
