This wine has plenty going for it, including all those delicious flavours that make Kiwi Pinot adored across the world. It's a concentrated but elegant wine with dark cherry aromas with complex notes of mocha and cinnamon. Luscious bramble, cherry and spice give generous length to the palate.

Fruit for this lovely Pinot was selected meticulously, destemmed in stainless steel tanks, and subjected to wild fermentation. Post aging in French oak barrels for about 10 months, the wine was fined and bottled for release. Grasshopper Rock Pinot Noir 2014 shows a medium purple hue, with light pink highlights along the edges. The blissful nose gives off scents of dried herbs, mushrooms, red fruits and violets while the supple palate is packed with black and red cherries coupled with nuances of tobacco, spice and leather. The medium-weighted palate has a great structure and finesse, which mesh well with the fine and grainy tannins to provide a lengthy mineral finale. A suggested food pairing with this wine is smoked hoki.

It’s this trade-off of acid for tannin that makes pinot noir so food friendly. Pinot works well with salmon and ocean trout, their (Omega 3-rich) oiliness lapped up by pinots exuberant acidity and is the perfect red with soft brie-style and washed-rind cheeses, coming into its own with blue cheese. Dark cherry, violet and cinnamon spice aromas complement red fruit, chocolate and subtle spice flavours on the palate. The fruit flavours are framed with supple tannins and a core of juicy acidity. This wine is immediately enjoyable but will continue to drink well for the next eight years if you can wait that long.

Situated 45 degrees south and influenced by the striking mountains, rivers and lakes, Central Otago experiences all four seasons. This seasonal variability combined with low fertility free draining soils, provides the ideal “tension” required to grow outstanding Pinot Noir. For Mumm Central Otago Blanc De Noirs, 100% Pinot Noir grapes were hand harvested entirely from grower owned vineyards, located in differing sub-regions of Central Otago (45% Tarras, 27% Alexandra, and 22% Gibbston Valley). Grapes were whole bunch pressed extracting juice in the gentlest manner, preserving the fruit’s natural elegance. Parcels were fermented separately using natural wild fermentation or traditional Champagne yeast, in either seasoned French Oak cuves or stainless steel and left on ferment lees whilst undergoing full malolactic fermentation. The extended lees contact contributes to the aromatic complexity and the malolactic fermentation softens the acidity to add richness to the palate. Assemblage of the final blend consists of carefully selected components of Pinot Noir which show strength and intensity. A carefully selected amount of aged reserve wines were blended to add extra complexity, before secondary fermentation. Based in Nuits-St-Georges, the famous Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825 and in more recent times, the domaine has greatly expanded its vineyards across the entire Côte d'Or. The grapes are entirely destemmed and fermented in a mix of new wooden vats for the top end wines and stainless steel for the lesser cuvées. This Pinot noir has a beautiful ruby colour. It has pleasant, fresh, red-fruit aromas on the nose, which we find again on the palate. It has rich and very ripe substance, with fine round tannins. It's a very well-structured and pleasing wine.
