McWilliam's Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz continues lead the pack of great Hunter Valley Shiraz. A lovely return to old form, this Maurice has a striking purple hue to it in the glass. To the nose aromas of liquorice and spice with hints of cedar will beguile. Layers of complex flavours dance across the palate including savoury, spicy dark fruits like dark plums and cherries. This gorgeous Shiraz was produced using grapes from Eden Valley. It was aged for 3 year in thick demi-muids which gave it a rich, dense red hue. On the nose, mushroom, black olive, truffle, bath soap, lavender and rosemary sage aromas are complemented by spices, liquorice and ham hock. The palate is laden with black and blue fruit flavours along with notes of plum fruit, cherry pie and liquorice. It further reveals fine tannins paving the way for a long finale. Named after the ancient Egyptian god Amon-Ra who was the champion of the poor and troubled and was central to personal piety, the temple of Amon-Ra is believed to be the first to plant a vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple. This incarnation is rich, full-bodied and viscous to the palate, yet with sublime oak integration and a balance on the back palate that is quite lifted allowing it to be paired with many meals and a prime candidate for medium to long term cellaring.
