Heading into budburst, soil moisture levels were on the lower side due to below-average rainfall in August and September. While spring was generally warm, temperatures remained modest for much of the season. October brought its share of challenges with heavy rains and isolated hail damage from thunderstorms late in the month. November continued the trend of above-average rainfall, while December stayed dry. The summer months were marked by temperate conditions, with only 11 days exceeding 35°C and no extreme heat events above 40°C. Ideal weather during harvest time - with significant day-to-night temperature shifts -allowed canopies to maintain health and support sugar development and phenolic maturity in the grapes without risking desiccation. These conditions culminated in a vintage that allowed winemakers to harvest grapes at their peak ripeness and freshness. The utterly sublime and exhilarating Langi Shiraz is typified by ethereal blackberry/ brambly/ dark cherry/ pepper/ violet aromas and flavours, supple textures, mid-palate buoyancy and underlying savoury oak. The grapes come from the "Langi Shiraz" block planted with "Swiss Clone material originally sourced from nearby Best's Concongella Vineyard. The granitic soils and cold south-westerlies are influential in producing its distinctive flavour profile. Meticulous attention to detail are behind the winemaking. After a cold soak the fruit (some whole bunch) is open-fermented with regular hand plunging. Some components complete fermentation in barrel. The wine is aged for around 14 months in new (45%) and seasoned French oak.

Every aspect has been carefully considered to ensure The Devil is the most characterful and expressive wine possible. With just eight barrels produced, The Devil really is in the detail. Gentle and patient winemaking is preferred to ensure that the wine expresses the unique site characters of the House Block. The hand harvested grapes were gently crushed and then fermented in an open fermenter and hand plunged to facilitate subtle tannin extraction. After 12 days on skins the fermenter was basket pressed and the free run and pressing fractions were combined. The wine was then aged for 20 months in 100% tight grained French oak. The proportion of new oak was kept low to encourage the continued expression of the characters that are exclusive to the vineyard site. To preserve purity and character the wine is made with minimal additions and is allowed to clarify naturally without the use of fining or filtration. Opulent layers of dark berry fruit sprinkled with roasted spices. A silky mouthfeel with moreish complexity, sublime balance and graceful poise. Made in the years that best show Coonawarra's unique terroir, this latest release displays the qualities that have made the 'Michael' one of the most highly regarded of all Australian Shiraz with aromas of red currants, cherries and raspberry that mesh every so well with the olive and white spice characters. The palate follows with an elegant structure bursting with dark brooding spice and succulent ripe tannins.

Meshach William Burge was Grant's great grandfather and was a central figure in establishing the Burge family in the Barossa Valley. This Shiraz named in his honour is sourced from old vines, some nearing 100 years old, and shows aromas and flavours of complex swiss chocolate, savoury spices and red currant.
