Spicy easy drinking Shiraz from RedHeads and the sustainable winery in the heart of the Barossa where their wines are made. This is a revival of the once very popular Pinball label. RedHeads has always been a bit of a rebel! The ‘movement’ started in 2002 in the McLaren Vale – in a cellar (complete with Pinball machines) where young winemakers could come in their spare time and make just the sort of small-scale wine they dreamed of (not like they did in their day job). Since then, the winery has moved home a few times, and today make their wines in the Barossa, at one of Australia's leading eco-friendly cellars. There, surrounded by many of Australia's biggest wine names, they handcraft revolutionary wines from top batches of grapes, rescued from under the noses of the big players.

The 2018 Victorian Shiraz exhibits chocolate and warm berry fruits on the nose. On the palate, pepper and spice dominate the American oak's chocolate richness. Winemaker Marc van Halderen and viticulturist Nick Dry have a simple philosophy: great wine is made in the vineyard. Together, they craft wines from varieties such as Moscato, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz into styles ranging from aromatic, low alcohol summer whites through to spicy, plummy reds.

Another great success story of grape grower turned grower/winemaker. Troy Kalleske is the latest custodian of a family heritage that dates back to 1853 when the Kalleske family first planted vineyards in the Moppa sub-discrict of Greenock, in the north-west of the Barossa Valley. This Shiraz (with a touch of Viognier and Petit Verdot) is 100% biodynamic and has concentrated aromas of blueberry, cloves, violets and dried fig. The silken palate that follows has dark fruit and lifted notes of floral with a sublime length of flavour.
