Michael Fragos grew up in McLaren Vale, and spent 14 years at Tatachilla before taking over at Chapel Hill in 2004. A three-time ‘Bushing King’, Michael has also been named best winemaker on the planet! James Halliday notes that his “wine quality is unfailingly excellent” . This one has an expressive nose of blackcurrant, bay leaf cigar box and chocolate. The palate is medium to full-bodied, beautifully structured, with a powerful complexity, fine-grained tannins, velvety texture and long, long finish.

This richly flavoured wine is jet black with brilliant sheen. The fresh forest berry fruits are balanced with a smokey cedar like oak lift. The palate is generous, with rich upfront cassis fruit and hints of cinnamon spice. Sublime oak flavours give great persistence.

A deep purple in colour with ruby hues. The nose exudes aromas of fresh blackcurrant, cassis and tobacco leaf. The palate is rich in blackcurrants and ripe red berry flavours with fine-grained tannins blending seamlessly with the fresh lifted fruit flavours. Our dry grown Angel Gully Vineyard in the subregion of Clarendon is rocky and steep with predominantly shale stone soil. The soil and altitude ensure slow, even ripening with depth and texture. Our McMurtrie Road vineyard on the valley floor enjoys cooling maritime influences and warm days giving full fruit flavours and body. A dry, warm growing season meant early flowering and a very early start to harvest. Good rainfall in early January provided welcome relief then the warm and dry conditions continued through February resulting in a very short, condensed vintage with some of the best quality fruit we have seen in years. To create this wine using the Italian ripasso technique, newly fermented young Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon is pumped over the dried grape skins from the JOSEPH Moda for additional fermentation. The wine is then pressed and barrel aged. Run by Roslyn Forbes and sons Steven and Andrew, Zilzie scored Double Gold at the China Wine and Spirit Awards for this super approachable Cabernet. Blackberry, cassis, black cherries and briny olive characters offer a deep layered flavour profile. Powerful yet light on its feet. James Halliday has noted that Zilzie wines “consistently far exceed expectations, given their enticing prices”.

Dark cherry red, with a deep violet hue, this is an incredibly aromatic varietal cabernet. Showing great intensity with bright berry fruits and mashed raspberry, together with licorice spice and espresso coffee. The palate is vibrant and fresh, building with layers of fruit, toasty oak and fine Cabernet tannins. It finishes with hints of anise spice, dark cocoa and cassis fruit.
