Château Phélan-Ségur continue to challenge the very best unclassified wines of Saint-Estèphe with a line of impressive vintages after a ownership change in the mid 1980s. Phélan makes fine, long lasting Bordeaux's dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with a third of the blend being Merlot. The wine has been no more fine than the 2009 release which is probably the best wine from Phélan-Ségur for the past 20 or so years. Swathes of depth with deep concentrated purple and blue fruits that will see the wine live comfortably for the next 10-15 years.

Meukow VSOP Superior is a balanced blend and easy to drink. Have this Cognac on the rocks or with a splash of water. The flavour features some mature fruits, raisins and nuts, a hint of vanilla, and spices are well present. The finish is long, with a little bit of orange peel.

G.H.MUMM Millésimé 2006 is a luminous and bright golden yellow in colour with fine, lingering bubbles.The nose reveals a superbly complex wine: notes of apple and pear, with yellow fruit such as apricot and mirabelleplum. Four Pillars Navy Strength is a gin very much in the style of the Rare Dry Gin but with the volume turned up slightly beyond 11. At 58.8% ABV the gin can support some more robust and interesting botanicals, so there are three new botanicals that are both new (and fresh), including fresh turmeric and ginger. Together they have heightened the spiciness of the gin, and the turmeric in particular has added weight and a lovely earthiness to the palate. Also in the botanical basket about half the normal oranges have been replaced with some explosive native finger limes, grown in Byron Bay. They have an intensity of flavour and acid that is almost impossible to believe, and in the basket they help the gin attain super citrus notes and lovely high-toned freshness.

Wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the acclaimed 2007 vintage are wines to be treasured, lauded and above all else enjoyed. Truly delightful wines of true regional character and quiet concentration. The Château Mont-Redon is a prime example with an abundance of cherry, mineral and wild pastures on the nose and wonderfully refined slatey type flavours with more than enough flesh on its bones. Will cellar for 15 years with aplomb.
