This vintage Riesling was harvested from the Central Otago wine region. It has an alcohol level of 8.4% and the colour of this medium-sweet white wine is a glittering pale white gold. Primary fruit aromas of nectarine, apricot, honey-crisp apple, citrus, spring blossoms and plum flow off the nose, with underpinned fragrances of honeycomb, ginger and clove. The palate features flavours of apple, pear and mineral nuances, with a touch of honey that fills the mouth and leaves a fresh taste. The mid-palate is filled with notes of tangerine and lime. The balanced sweetness and fine acidity are brought to fruition by a long and cleansing finish. This wine is best served at 43°F. The palate has powerful fruit intensity and finesse with fine acidity that is delicious now but will reward with medium to long-term cellaring.

The cooler climate of Tasmania has helped to produce a wonderful Riesling; full of flavour and acid. Given these characters are in abundance, this wine should cellar for decades.

Conceived as a white wine development program, the Bin 51 Riesling soon became one of Penfolds' star performers. Eden Valley is an obvious choice of region for Riesling due to the higher altitude and cool climate. The wine offers delicate aromas of fresh cut apples and pears with a twist of lemon and minerality towards the end. A great deal of fruits and acidity makes for an interesting white wine with propensity to age gracefully if carefully cellared.

This semi-dry Riesling from Schloss Vollrads is a prime example for the variety. It has an inviting floral bouquet, subtle minerality, and complex fruit focused on flavours of green and yellow apples and Nashi pears. The finish is beautifully balanced, with just the right amount of acid, and stays and stays.
