BROKENWOOD WINES HBA Vineyard Selection Shiraz, Hunter-McLaren Vale A museum release after ten years of cellaring at the winery the HBA Shiraz is an exultant blend. An amalgamation of the iconic Graveyard Vineyard from the Hunter Valley (Classified Exceptional) and the Wade Vineyard from Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, where they source their highly rated single vineyard Block 2. Both regions had a warm and dry vintage, allowing the grapes to be picked at full ripeness, providing a beautifully balanced depth of flavour. Expressing sweet earthy notes and dark chocolate on the nose, the oak and fruit integration is seamless on the fine and medium to full-bodied palate, with a refined core of dark fruits and a lengthy finale.

A spectacularly individual wine, Wendouree Shiraz typically possesses a core of blackberry black olive aromas with complex iodine, wet bitumen, animal hide characters. The low-yielding beautifully formed old Shiraz vines, tortured and serpentine (many from the original plantings), are unique, producing small berries with thick skins and a very high seed content. The fruit is vinified in stainless steel lined open fermenters. Maturation takes place in roughly 20 percent new oak for around a year. Although there is clarity and buoyancy of fruit on the palate, the tannins are rusty and vice-like. It has been described as "an iron fist in velvet glove" type wine. Bottled under screw cap from the 2009 vintage.

A special release from winemaker Dean Hewitson, the titled “66” referring to his winery address on the fabled Seppeltsfield Road, For Tony Love it's a "...a supremely finessed, singular expression where the fruit and oak marriage is everything, just a glimpse of smoky bacon, just a faint whiff of eucalypt, all expertly woven and expressed with a contemporary vitality in the palate, seasoned generously with a black pepper spice character, concluding in an elite wrapping of gastronomic Amaro-like bitterness." (Toy Love, WinePilot). For Ken gargett "This is a class effort. The palate sees the emergence of notes of soy, cloves and blackberries. There is fine balance, impressive length and the finest of tannins. Wonderful stuff, which will surely drink beautifully for the next ten to twenty years. Sam Kim, Wine Orbit scores it a whopping 98pts "Immensely complex and perfumed, the bouquet presents black and blueberry, violet, tapenade, star anise, and stylish oak characters. The concentrated palate exhibits exceptional depth and weight, wonderfully framed by velvety texture and finely infused tannins. It is opulent and substantial, yet refined and harmonious, with a persistent and gratifying finish. Gorgeously proportioned and balanced, ensuring its gracious development."

A very impressive Museum Release Reserve Shiraz from a single Barossa Valley vineyard, with two 96pt scores. Ken Garget WinePilot tells us it's from "Old vines from a single site…" but Ray Jordan is more dramatic: “Wow, this is Barossa Shiraz—it’s big, it’s bold, but there is a classy refinement here… It’s an opulent, plush, and generous style of Shiraz that captures what was a very good year in the Barossa. Dark prune-like characters with plums, dark cherry, and some spicy savoriness as well, with that final richer dark chocolate coating completing what is an excellent wine. 96pts.” (Ray Jordan, WinePilot). Sam Kim, Wine Orbit is just as enthusiastic: “This is powerful with refinement, showing dark fruit richness, toasted spice, smoked game, assorted nut, and dark cocoa characters on the nose, leading to a superbly weighted palate offering seductive complexity with velvety texture, finishing impressively long and plush. Wonderfully harmonious and structured with excellent depth and opulence. 96pts”.

Château Pontet-Canet is a classic large Pauillac property that adjoins the Mouton Rothschild vineyards that in the past has struggled to get fruit richness into their wines until Michel Rolland was called in. The wines of the past 15 years have produced lovely, voluptuous reds with ripe fruit and brilliant balance. The 2009 is quite simple a stunning incarnation of Pontet-Canet and quite possibly their best wine ever produced! A 'tour de force' of the highest standard, layers of concentrated fruit along with sublime oak integration see this biodynamically farmed vineyard reach Bordeaux perfection. Will age comfortably for the next 50 years.

Righteous to be called a true Barossa Shiraz; Teusner FG Shiraz is bold, packed with intense black fruits, mocha and sweet spices on the nose. Great balance in oak use, giving the wine structured tannins and extra vanilla oak flavour as the back bone on the palate. Hand picked grapes from one of the oldest vines in Barossa. This is certainly one of those wines that could impress!

One of Australia's icon wines, this is Cabernet at its very best. This wine is the very definition of power and elegance. Hand crafted by Keith Mugford and his team in the Margaret River, Moss Wood deservedly fits in the Exceptional category of Langton's Classification of Australian Wine.

Felton Road is responsible, to a large extent, for putting Central Otago on the world Pinot Noir map. The wines are, well not so much fruit-driven, as perhaps turbo-charged! Amazing levels of red fruits, a subtle yet important savoury component, along with the silky texture all Pinot enthusiasts long for. This single-block wine shows how different portions of a single vineyard can still have a quite unique character, or what the French would call terrior.

McWilliam's Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz continues lead the pack of great Hunter Valley Shiraz. A lovely return to old form, this Maurice has a striking purple hue to it in the glass. To the nose aromas of liquorice and spice with hints of cedar will beguile. Layers of complex flavours dance across the palate including savoury, spicy dark fruits like dark plums and cherries. A classic of classics.
