In Australia, where some of the oldest Grenache vines in the world are found, its enjoying a well-deserved resurgence. Winemakers are treating this somewhat overlooked wine with greater respect, producing spicier, prettier expressions or creating juicy blends that pay tribute to the classic wines of the Rhone Valley. Looking for charming wine? Look no further than this rising star Bonpas Cotes du Rhone Villages. The bouquet is complex and generous with notes of blackcurrant and spices. The palate is rich and dynamic with lovely flavors of black fruit and sweet spices with a very long finish.

Dandelion Vineyards Menagerie of the Barossa GSM

Intriguing aromas of rose petals and a summer pudding of lifted red fruits, berries and a hit of cinnamon and Asian spice. The palate is opulent, with intense red berries balanced by soft velvety tannins and supple oak with great balance from the acid reknown in Barossa Grenache. 'The cold, wet 2011 vintage hit the Barossa Valley particularly hard, wiping out huge tracts of vineyards. Dandelion's blend, then, came as a delightful surprise a tender, juicy, seductive drop that made the bottle seem too small. It's a blend of grenache (85 per cent), shiraz (10 per cent) and mataro (aka mourvedre or monastrell). The back label hints at how winemaker Elena Brooks and the Dandelion crew saved the day, "handpicking selected bunches" (that is, avoiding the rotten ones) of the three varieties for co-fermentation and ultimate success. Allegrini Valpolicella DOC

Ruby red in colour, with purplish-blue highlights; the nose exhibits fragrant fruit with prominent notes of cherries, echoed by fresher hints of pepper and aromatic herbs, typical of Corvina and Corvinone, the historic varietals of this appellation. Whilst young it is impressively lively and playful on the palate whereas some two years on it expresses greater delicacy and finesse.

Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre IGT

This wine is elegant and well balanced, with a good structure and aroma. Ruby red in colour with purple hues, it offers light hints of raisins, sophisticated notes of vanilla, black pepper, cloves and cinnamon. It has a long, velvety finish and soft tannins.

Hither & Yon Carignan

One of the very few examples of Carignan produced in Australia. This is the first release of this wine from Hither & Yon and it's really approachable already.Bright purple in the glass. Perfumed nose of black cherry, plum and black pepper. Light to medium weight with a fresh core of fleshy black fruits and tart red berries with good balance of acid and tannin crunch. An excellent young-drinker.

Cantine Pra Valpolicella 'La Morandina' DOC

Bright red colour with tints of purple. The mineral notes in the wine are accentuated with the period of maturation in the bottle. The nose is of sharp spice and berries. On the palate it has good acidity and freshness. The persistent tannins give harmony to the wine, with an aftertaste of black pepper and currant. Light drying period of 20 days. The grapes are destemmed, pressed and vinified with delestage method. Alcoholic fermentation followed by malolactic one in vertical stainless steel vats. 3-6 months ageing in 20hl oak cask of Allier. Located in the heart of the Soave Classico DOC near Verona, Cantine Pra is run by brothers Sergio and Graziano Pra, the former tending the estates 25 hectares of vineyards and the latter in charge of the cantine. The Pra range of wines are considered to be one of the benchmarks for the region including the Soave Classico, an un-oaked Soave Classico Superiore, Monte Grande, the barrique aged Soave Classico Colle Sant' Antonio and a stunning Recioto di Soave Classico. A producer that is totally in tune with their terroir and what the varieties Garganega and Trebbiano are capable of delivering in the glass.
