This rarely seen straight Bordeaux varietal is one wine enthusiasts are gravitating to, and Margaret River appears a natural home for Malbec to thrive. A cooler, longer 2019 vintage meant our red wines showed supple, ripe tannins and full lengthy flavours, evident in the ultra-premium 2019 Evans & Tate Single Vineyard Malbec. From a small block on the family-run Carter Road Vineyard in the heart of Wilyabrup, this wine is a world-class example of how great Malbec can drink on its own. Two trophies and five gold medals are just a fraction of praise for this award-winning wine, matured in larger French oak puncheons (12% new) to ensure perfume and freshness are retained and a silky, dense and refined palate with textural complexity. Intense but delicate, the wine is fruit driven, juicy and super ripe, with a peppery flavour profile encompassing blueberry, dark plum, vanilla essence and chocolate and orange peel.

Displaying a perfumed nose of dark berries and savoury characters.The palate is full of juicy berries and earthy notes that are well supported by fine grained, integrated tannins.

Winemaking The fruit was picked on the 2nd and 24th of April showing excellent flavours and tannin maturity. Lightly crushed fruit was then placed to a static and open fermenter for period of fermentation with daily pump overs to ensure a moderate fermentation temperature and extraction of tannin. Once the desirable amount of flavour and tannin was evident the wine was pressed before being matured in seasoned French oak for a following 10 months before bottling.

The canopy management is a vertical shoot position trellis with a north south facing aspect. The clonal selection is the popular Houghton selection Cabernet Sauvignon. Soil types are typically sandy loam over free draining lateritic sub soils. 2021 is typified by a cool and mild growing season which has culminated in wines of delicacy and poise. Winemaking The fruit was picked on the 11th April showing excellent flavours and tannin maturity. Lightly crushed fruit was then placed to a static fermenter for a further 13 days of fermentation with daily pump overs to ensure a moderate fermentation temperature and extraction of tannin. Once the desirable amount of flavour and tannin was evident the wine was pressed before being matured in seasoned French oak for a following 9 months before bottling. Blackberry, plum, and black cherry flavors shine through, complementing the Cabernet's traditional notes of blackcurrant and cassis. The wine dances the line between serious and fun,finishing with fine, long, silky tannins and a hint of mocha spice.
