One of the most exciting discoveries we made from a trip to New Zealand last year. Coal Pit is located in the Gibbston Valley sub region of Central Otago. Perfumed with violets, the nose is lifted and aromatic. Vibrant mid palate of black doris plum, wild herb, coffee and cassis backed by silky tannins and well integrated spicy oak. Anna and Jason Flowerday run the Te Whare Ra vineyard in Marlborough according to organic and bio-dynamic practices. The fruit is picked and sorted by hand, then processed in a winery especially designed for small-batch wine-making. This dry Pinot Gris is finely structured with great purity and length of flavour. Lifted aromas of nashi pear, raspberry, red apple and white florals follow on to the palate, where they're balanced by a fine, supple texture and lingering minerality.

The South Island of New Zealand is home to some of the worlds greatest new world Pinot Noir's and Central Otago can claim a large proportion of these. This superb Otago Pinot from South Island is an exotic light bodied red with wild fruit flavours of strawberry and ripe cherry and proves you don't have to break the bank to get great Otago Pinot Noir.

This vintage has produced a Pinot Noir displaying ripe rich aromatics; perfumed black fruits of the forest dominate the aroma and these are underpinned by lovely clove, anise and other brown spice notes. The wine displays lovely elegance and flows with striking precision and clarity. On the palate it kicks off with a supple dark berry entry, moving into a beautifully textured plush mid-palate, after which fine elegant textural tannins frame fruit and acidity on a lengthy finish. Mt Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Noir will improve for 7-10 years given optimal vintage and cellaring conditions.

Giesen's Pinot Gris is an beautifully aromatic and vibrant white wine balanced with subtle elegance. A nose of poached pear along with notes of almond, dry spice and a whiff of vanilla. In the mouth the wine continues to please with tropical fruit tones and a textural brioche characteristic. Along with the attractive fruit and moutfeel, the wine is impeccably structured with cooling acid lines and a length of flavour that is nothing short of persistent.
