Houghton Gladstones Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful example of well established wineries in the Western Australian wine scene with access to some amazing vineyards sites within the Margaret River. On show here are marvelous aromas and flavours of bay leaf, black tea and some spicy mocha notes. Excitingly dense on palate with harmonious oak balance and impressive acidity. A brilliant wine.

As the vines have aged, the monopole Clos de Rougemont, from a small vineyard close to Tours, has even greater depth of flavour, and a delicious long dry finish. It is planted on pure limestone soil and vinified in barrel with a tiny proportion of new oak. A truly stellar Vouvray!

CLOTILDE DAVENNE Saint Bris Vieilles Vignes Clotilde Davenne wines come from the village of Courgis, right next door to her winery in Prehy. The Saint Bris Vieilles Vignes has an intense fresh minerality with grapefruit, mandarin and peach notes. The wine has a pleasing texture with a mighty yet refined balance between the concentrated flavours of stone fruit, citrus, blackcurrant, leaves and dried fruit. A harmonious and flavoursome wine with a long and elegant finish.

The largest estate in St Emillion, Laroque has been in the Beaumartin family since 1935, but has been completely revitalised and garnered a cult following in the last decade. The vineyards were originally put down in the 18th Century, with the current vines planted in the 1960s. David Suire has taken in the mantle of winemaker with aplomb - his most recent releases being consistently excellent. The property also produces fruit for wines sold as Chateau Peymouton and the estates second wine Les Tours de Laroque.

Awarded with a “Coup de cœur" (= favourite) prize by the 2018 guide of prestigious "Revue des vins de France", the Domaine Emile Beyer is a true rising star in the Alsace region. In Eguisheim (Alsace) since 1580, Emile Beyer has preserved family know-how for 14 generations. Christian and Valérie Beyer now manage this 17 hectares estate, half of which is located on the Grands Crus and Lieux-dits hillsides. The soil is a living environment and a source of energy for the vines. By taking care of their terroirs, Domaine Emile Beyer promotes the balance of the vine and preserve the subtility and unique character of Alsacian wines. All the Alsatian grape are present in the vines: riesling, gewurztraminer, pinots (white, gray and black), muscat, sylvaner and even, for Crémants, chardonnay and auxerrois. The estate uses sustainable farming practices and is in conversion to organic. All Grand Crus are in conversion Demeter (biodynamic).

Bright straw colour with a watery hue. Aromas of gooseberry and citrus mix with grassy asparagus characters and smoky flint like notes. Nicely rounded yet fresh in the mouth, herbaceous gooseberry, citrus and asparagus flavours overlay grassy and gun smoke infused back drop. The Berthier family have been winegrowers for five generations, with Clement and Florian taking over the reins in 2012 to continue the family tradition. Clement is responsible for winemaking and sales, while Florian is focused on the vineyards. Located across the Loire River opposite Pouilly Fume, the terroir for this Sancerre comprises mainly of flint and limestone. This 100% Sauvignon Blanc is racy and expressive, with bright grapefruit, white flowers, and notes of struck flint. The palate opens up rich and full, finishing with a rich yet silky freshness.

In 2013 only 2500 cases will be made (half the production of the last few abundant years and a fraction of the production of Ch. d’Yquem), but the final blend is not decided until early summer. Each barrel shows its individual character, but all had in common an energy, focus, persistence, depth and precision that makes this one of the wines of the vintage. The ethereal quality that I consider the hallmark of a great Climens was already noticeable as was an intense perfumed fragrance, which is the hallmark of the 2013 vintage. 2013 Climens is a jewel in the making and though its subtle elegance will make this approachable young, it has decades of ageing and evolving ahead.
