Meshach William Burge was Grant's great grandfather and was a central figure in establishing the Burge family in the Barossa Valley. The Glaetzer family have been part of the Barossa winemaking scene since 1888 and now Ben takes over the reigns and produces Shiraz of the utmost intensity and concentration. Named after the ancient Egyptian god Amon-Ra who was the champion of the poor and troubled and was central to personal piety, the temple of Amon-Ra is believed to be the first to plant a vineyard to produce wine for the citizens of the temple. This incarnation is rich, full-bodied and viscous to the palate, yet with sublime oak integration and a balance on the back palate that is quite lifted allowing it to be paired with many meals and a prime candidate for medium to long term cellaring.

Concentration doesn't even begin to describe this truly luxurious Barossa Shiraz. When harvested, the fruit displayed intense jammy, plum and prune aromas which were simply crying out for some extra maturation. After which the wine has now begun to show off a wonderful array of warm spicy notes with that trademark mouthfilling soft tannin and gentle acidity. With the capability to cellar for another 5 to 8 years, this is the Barossa Shiraz you have to own!

2015 St Hugo Barossa Shiraz. The nose promises classic Barossa Shiraz, with a heady and a complex mix of dark fruits and spice mingling with toasted cedar aromas which unfold over time in the glass. Elegant fine tannins are felt across the palate and the subtle oak influence yields cedar and soft charry notes on the finish. This wine is beautifully balanced, with excellent structure and length typifying the St Hugo Heritage of power and elegance.

Deep crimson in colour. Spicy aromas of Satsuma plums, blueberries, crushed mulberries, blackberries and blackcurrants are complemented beautifully by savoury notes of cardamom, bay leaf and licorice. Rich, succulent plum and blue and black berry fruits fill the palate and entwine with black pepper, bay leaf and anise, while plush layers of soft, supple tannins and a savoury line of flavour provide for a firm and well structured mid-palate, and long, fine finish.

Sourced from vines with more than 50 years of age, this is a full-bodied expressive wine that shows the Barossa can produce generous fruit-forward Cabernet with defined structure. You’ll find lifted aromatics of mulberry and blackcurrant, along with roasted coffee and mocha notes. The lavish palate will please Barossa fans and, along with the blackcurrants and fruits of forest flavours, comes savoury spice, cedar and mineral notes. Plenty of energy and the tannins are finely woven. The wine was matured in new and seasoned French barriques for 18 months.
