Giovanni Rosso's Serralunga d'Alba Barolo represents the classic heart of this historic commune. Davide Rosso, who took over from his father Giovanni in the 1990s, works with old-vine Nebbiolo from key Serralunga sites, crafting wines that speak clearly of place. Fermentation occurs in concrete, with long macerations to build depth and structure, followed by extended maturation in large, neutral French oak botti to preserve purity and nuance. Each vintage shows the hallmarks of Serralunga, perfumed red cherry and rose, layered with tobacco, earth and iron. The palate combines freshness and tension with fine, persistent tannins that promise graceful ageing. It is both an introduction to and an authentic expression of one of Barolo's most powerful terroirs. There’s nothing mysterious or untoward in the winemaking for this beauty. It’s kept on skins for a short period, then pressed, juice fermented over a couple of weeks, and aged on lees in stainless steel for five months. As with all Giovanni Rosso’s wines, this is about site. Site, and the ancient grapes (mostly carricante) that are thought to have been grown on the slopes of Mt Etna for at least 1,000 years. So they’ve had time to acclimatise. It’s a gorgeous, zesty-herby white, soft and pillowy and all propped up by a precise and racy acidity. It’s super long, and just bordering on mouthwatering. Quite subtle flavours flitting around the edges, hiding in the shadows and peeking out when you’re not concentrating.

Iris, hay, woodland berry and botanical herb aromas come to the forefront on this fragrant, delicious red. The focused, vibrant palate picks up where the nose leaves off, delivering juicy Morello cherry, strawberry compote, star anise and tobacco framed in tightly wound, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity.
