Helen & Joey Estate Yarra Valley Inara Shiraz

Beautifully concentrated, the 2019 Inara Shiraz has aromas and flavours of black pepper with spicy stewed mulberry. The oak ageing has added hints of vanilla, clove and cinnamon. Fine tannins support the juicy red berry fruit. The 2019 Inara Shiraz can be enjoyed on its own or share it with friends over a big plate of smoked barbeque brisket.

Helen & Joey Estate Alena Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

In early March, we hand harvested 6 tonnes of Cabernet sauvignon from our cane pruned, lower yielding section of our Cabernet sauvignon. The grapes were destemmed and very gently crushed prior to fermentation. Throughout fermentation, a range of cap management processes was used in order to extract colour and fine tannin. Once alcoholic fermentation was complete, the tanks were filled and allowed to macerate on their skins for 6 weeks. The post fermentation maceration allowed us to build tannin structure in the wine, without adding bitterness or astringency. The wine was placed in French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, followed by ageing for 12 months. At the end of the ageing, individual barrels were selected for the final blend. The wine required no further treatment except bottling. While 2017 was a cooler year, our 2017 Alena Cabernet Sauvignon still displays the classic Yarra Valley characteristics of cassis, violets and chocolate. This is all supported by refined tannins and the sweet spice from the oak. The wine is very young, after bottling in July 2018, and will reward time in the cellar.Such a fine, complex wine requires a fine, complex match with food.

Helen & Joey Estate Yarra Valley Layla Pinot Noir

2019 Layla Pinot Noir is reflective of the cooler and later conditions of the 2019 growing season. Warmer years produce a more forward and plush style, the cooler years a more restrained, tightly wound and structured version. The aromatics and flavours of this wine are floral with black cherry, herbs, ferrous minerals and floral notes. It’s light yet complex and seamless. Texturally the Layla Pinot Noir is silken. Layla Pinot Noir is a wine that is quite versatile with food. It marries well with a wide range of vegetable and bird meat dishes, and is totally delicious with aromatic spices such as those associated with mediteranean middle east and north Africa.

The appearance is pale pink in colour. The wine is summer in a glass with ripe raspberry, cherry and violet aromas with a touch of white flowers. Phenolics and acid play an important role in ensuring the wine has sufficient structure to be enjoyed with food. The fresh red berry flavours support this savoury structure. In the cooler seasons, enjoy this wine with a bowl of steaming chilli con carne.
