The now much sought after Righteous range of wines from Kym Teusner was first established in 2005 with the Grenache and this is the latest incarnation of this foreboding Barossa wine. Sourced from an 80 year old bush-vine vineyard, the Righteous Grenache was gently crushed and fermented in open fermenters with regular pump-overs. Maturation was completed in a mix of French and American oak and has resulted in a modern classic Grenache.

Grenache in all its glory. Red fruits proudly lead the charge: raspberries, cranberries and pomegranate. Fragrant coulis on a summer berry pudding. Ferric notes of steel wool and cordite allude to the iron-rich clay soil upon which the vines prosper in the Barossa Valley. Charcuterie aromas of Jamón ibérico and Mojama dry cured tuna notes add an interesting slightly saline nuance. Rubbed olive leaves, sumac spice and ginger peel aromas round out a very enticing nose. 2016 Penfolds Bin 138 Shiraz Grenache Mataro 750ml is a delicate blend from the Barossa Valley wine region. Christmas cake aromas are evident on the nose and the palate is textured with an old Barossa disposition. A lengthy finish make this blend particularly enjoyable. Medium deep colour. Lovely juicy blackberry, dark plum aromas with ginger, savoury oak notes. Generous and polished in structure with dark plum, blackberry, ginger flavours, fine looseknit slinky textures and underlying roasted walnut, mocha notes. Finishes chocolaty and long with bitter sweet notes. A really attractive wine with lovely density and vinosity. Really great to drink soon, to take advantage of the ripe youthful and buoyant fruit, but should keep for quite a while developing an earthy complexity. Andrew Caillard MW93 Points

Grenache has long been a stalwart of the South Australian wine scene and Penfolds have been blending Grenache with Shiraz since the 1950's. Recent years has seen a growing trend for the luscious perfumed styles like those emanating out of the northern Rhône and the Bin 138 produces a brilliant example. In 1912, horse fanatic Joseph Osborn sold his stables and horses and bought the family the d'Arenberg estate in premium McLaren Vale. Joseph chose McLaren Vale as it has some of Australia's oldest vineyards, and with an array of soils and the cooling affect of the nearby ocean, it's ideal for vines. Winemaker today is sixth generation Chester Osborn. He continues the family tradition of treading the grapes by foot part way through fermentation. It certainly ensures plenty of dark colour, character and richness in the wines. You'll always spot a d'Arenberg wine with its bold red stripe on the label.

2015 Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Grenache, Purpled crimson. Magically entwined with elegant hints of cherry, raspberry, terracotta, cocoa, walnut, and Turkish delight. The flourishing perfume continues to rise with an ever-present core appearing as the seamless spine. Harmoniously, these characters gracefully nuance, reinforce and offer evolution. A harmonious composition of spice, fruit, glycerin and chalky velvet produce an aristocratic experience that is nearly limitless in its depth of expression. The palate is bright and taught with natural acid however it is incredibly layered and deeply concentrated with silky smooth extract. The impressive purity of the fruit, alone , ushers superlatives however it is the fine boned and seamlessly structured palate, coupled with an air of effortless power that remains the most haunting element to this exceptional old vine Grenache.

Fleshier and more structured that its predecessor's vineyards, a violet/lavender centre to raspberries, sarsaparilla and creamy blueberry pie. Plush and opulent. Always smooth and creamy in its fruit expression the site really offers a unique balance of approachability and cellar-worthiness. The Blewitt Springs site has a brilliant aged profile that may be mistaken for aged grand-cru Burgundy when tasted blind.
