The Mesta was a powerful association of shepherds in Medieval Castile, controlling the routes for herding sheep across the country. The Mesta vineyards are situated deep in the land of the Mesta. The Strata Tempranillo comes from Victoria where grape growing and winemaking has existed since the mid-1800's. However due to the pest phylloxera, the region was widely damaged, leading to decline in production from the 1890's until the 1950's. Some 70 years on now, the region is revitalized with more than 800 winieries and 600 cellar doors, thus making Victoria an exciting and vibrate wine state yet again.
