PENFOLDS Special Bin 111A Shiraz, Clare Valley, Barossa Valley It is a tradition at Penfolds to experiment, research and develop new wines. The large number of mostly one-off, bin-numbered wines produced, beginning in the 1950s, initially shows a company diversifying away from its core business of fortified wines. In the 1960s, the primary aim was to make show wines, but the program also resulted in the development of current-day staples like Bin 707 and Bin 389 and, more recently, of Bin 407, RWT Shiraz and Yattarna Chardonnay. In effect, the first two Special Bin wines were the then-experimental 1951 Grange and the control wine Max Schubert made alongside it so he could see what the wine would be like matured in a single, old 4500 litre cask rather than the new, 300 litre American oak barrels in which he put the real Grange.That wine is now forgotten, but, said Schubert (in 1979): It did... set the guidelines for the production and marketing of a whole range of special red wines which have been sought after, vintage by vintage, to this day. Schuberts successors, the late Don Ditter, John Duval and Peter Gago, continued the tradition, making small-batch wines (1000 dozen or less) for comparison with existing styles, to try out something new in the way of varietal or regional combinations or simply to spotlight a brilliant parcel of fruit. Some may be forgotten in time, but others are considered among the greatest Australian wines of all time.

The 2022 season was generally cool, with the prevailing conditions delaying harvest by several weeks. The extra hang hang-time allowed the grapes to develop lovely varietal characters and balanced ripe tannins. Bin 707 is a perfect cabernet sauvignon representation of Penfolds ‘House Style’: intensely-flavoured fruit; completion of fermentation and maturation in new oak; expressing a Penfolds understanding of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. During the ‘50s and early ‘60s cabernet sauvignon was mostly used for blending, but Schubert’s breakthrough with the varietal as a stand-alone wine came in 1964 with inaugural vintage. Early Bin 707s were typically open fermented under wax-lined header boards and matured in seasoned old oak (rather than new oak). The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 (when fruit was directed to other wines) nor in 1981, 1995, 2000, 2003, 2011 or 2017 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). Full-bodied and with proven cellaring potential, Bin 707 retains a secure place among the ranks of Australia’s finest cabernets. Vineyard: In Coonawarra, spring's cooler temperatures led to nine days of sub-2°C weather. The deployment of frost fans proved effective in safeguarding vine shoots against these cold snaps. Warm weather prevailed in December, setting the stage for superb flowering and fruit-set conditions. Veraison was uniform across vineyards, leading to consistent grape development allowing flavour, tannin, and colour to flourish during the final ripening phase under near-perfect conditions. The Barossa Valley experienced cooler-than-average temperatures coupled with spring thunderstorms. Despite this, yields and grape quality surpassed expectations even among vines impacted by hail. A particularly arid yet cool December slowed down fruit-set, however, robust canopies played a pivotal role in driving up sugar levels and physiological maturity without the risk of dehydration at harvest time. The cooler growing season also fostered excellent acid retention which translated into grapes that were both finely structured and balanced. Padthaway encountered a frost event in October, but enjoyed an otherwise gentle growing season, free from extreme heat spikes or rain delays at harvest time. McLaren Vale reported only three days exceeding 35°C - half what was recorded for the previous year's vintage - resulting in a gradual harvest that allowed Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to be picked at their peak condition. Nose - Peppermint, Blackcurrant, Woodsmoke Peppermint, vanilla, blackcurrant, bay leaves and woodsmoke, peppercorns wrapped in milk chocolate. Palate - Cherry Chocolate, Sage, Savoury Olives Blackberry compote, cherry chocolate, nutmeg, bay leaf, sage herbals, iodine and Mediterranean black olive savoury notes. Finish - Thyme, Intense, Lingering Woodsy Spice This is a muscular red wine with the smoothness of oil. It looks good for drinking even now, as intense as it is, but it will outlive most of us.

The 2018 Don Shiraz was our first release as new owners of the vineyard.Fruit was handpicked to enhance best quality and this particular season was outstanding.After natural fermentation of 2 weeks the wine was pressed off skins and then rack to (25% new) French and American barriques for the next 15 months.The wine displays a lovely deep purple crimson colour, ripe blueberries and spices, a touch of black pepper and is rounded out by generous palate flavours.Cellaring and decanting will further enhance this wine.A special wine that is drinking superbly now or save for that special occasion.

Mevi's Barricas del Plata draws on its 100% Malbec, sourced from Maipu in Mendoza Argentina. Grapes are harvested and fermented with tradition. Berry and dark chocolate nose, 13% ABV wine has a supple, ripe red fruity palate.

Lights Valley wines commemorate Colonel William Light and his discovery and naming of Barossa Valley in 1837. Barossa Valley was named in memory of the British victory over the French in the Battle of Barrosa in 1811. However, due to clerical error the valley was misspelt Barossa. Tasting Notes: The Colonel Shiraz displays notes of black fruits, olive and restrained oak. With a fine tannin structure ensuring the palate has great depth, this is a classic Barossa Shiraz.
