Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Graben Riesling Auslese
Grosset G110 Riesling
Purity, drive, a vibrant quality that gives us pause. There is power that builds, a precise line that follows through to a remarkable length. This clone of riesling lends itself to a winemaking philosophy that utilises smaller bunches for greater fruit concentration, complexity and lift on the palate from extended lees maturation. Flavours in the apple spectrum with underlying power, full in the mid-palate with hints of creamy complexity and lingering white fruit intensity, its texture is layered, as the clone celebrates its unique qualities with the occasional surprise. For 40 years, Grosset have crushed and fermented various clones of riesling separately. These clonal components are typically blended or reunited according to the source vineyard, prior to bottling. Having a vineyard planted to a mix of clones has been shown to contribute to the consistency and complexity of the single vineyard rieslings. Four years ago, Jeffrey’s daughter Georgie suggested they bottle a few dozen of each riesling clone from different vineyards and taste each over time. One clone consistently expressed more concentration and persistence, but was less fruity. At the Rockwood vineyard (ACO certified organic), just one clone is planted on a strip of silty loam over red rock. The riesling berries and bunches are small. The clone is the one noted as exceptional. The fourth vintage of this single clone - 110 - riesling is as stunning as the previous releases - and subtley different from them. It's still sourced from the tiny plantings of the clone on the biodynamic Rockwood Vineyard. Georgie Grosset is still perfectly happy to remind her Dad that she suggested the clone was so different from the other Grosset rieslings that it needed to be bottled separately. Almost overwhelming, voluminous perfumes leap from the glass signifying that this is special. There's a generosity on the palate, too, expansive, even a touch dramatic, showing lemongrass and lemon drop flavours. There's a depth of flavour, a hint of herbs, perhaps coriander, cumin, sage giving depth to the limey flavours; a tingle on the mid-palate, and bright vibrant acidity which defines the finish.

Lagavulin 8 Year Old 200th Anniversary Scotch Whisky
Released to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of Lagavulin distillery by John Johnston in 1816, this eight-year-old is big and smoky, with sweet spice that becomes apparent with a drop of water. Inspired by the visit of Alfred Barnard to the distillery in the 1880's when he tried an 'exceptionally fine' eight-year-old from the distillery, this is a fitting tribute for the milestone.
Talisker Port Ruighe Scotch Whisky
Double matured in port casks, this malt is a toast to the Scottish traders who braved the high seas and were instrumental in founding the port wine trade, shipping it to the world. 'Port Ruighe' (pronounced 'Portree') is the Gaelic spelling of the once bustling trading port on Skye. The Port finish combines Talisker's powerful maritime character with succulent sweet notes of rich berry fruits for a superb contrasting taste experience.
Penfolds Grange Shiraz LNY GB
Ring in the Year of the Dragon with one of the world's most celebrated wines. The first commercial release of Grange coincided with the Year of the Dragon, bringing a unique sentiment to this release. Continuing an unbroken lineage from the very first experimental release, the 2019 Grange is full-bodied, powerful, and perfectly balanced - a gift that is sure to be treasured for years to come. Aromas; Automatically recognisable - formic and glacial higher notes. Beneath, a more familial oaked nuttiness recedes to reveal aromas of black licorice/anise/black olive. A shroud of condensed glazed fruits surrenders to reveal a fresher disposition … a coulis of berries and stone fruits; boiled beetroot. Upon sitting, a sprinkle of lavender and exotic spices almost completes the aromatic package - well, at least for another minute or two. Early days. Palate; Cohesion, vigour, sheen, poise. Fresh and balanced. Neither exaggerated nor over-ripe – lively blueberry and other youthful blue/black fruits bely the maturation timeline of this alluring blend. Certainly befitting this style, unmistakable barrel-ferment characters are undoubtedly more pronounced on palate than nose. If the mid-palate is somewhat formidable (ably supporting a thick/dense core), by contrast the back-palate is creamy and caressingly endearing. Expansive and full – washing away all ahead of it. Texturally, chewy/grainy tannins and just-right acidity. Peak Drinking: 2029 - 2065 Awards: • 98+ Points - Andrew Caillard MW • 98 Points - Tyson Stelzer • 98 Points - Ken Gargett • 98 Points - Jeni Port • 19+/20 Points - Matthew Jukes
