Nusa Cana aren't just bringing back Indonesian rum - they're making rum unlike any other. Javanese sugar cane molasses, natural forest filtered water and wild yeast (grown on dried red rice) are slowly fermented, then distilled twice in antique pot stills. The rum is matured in Javanese teak barrels and transported to Holland (it's a 250-year-old tradition) to be blended with selected modern rums.

Gosling's Black Seal Rum has a rich, intricate flavour, well balanced and nuanced with butterscotch, vanilla and caramel. Black Seal includes products of both pot stills, as used in fine Cognacs, and continuous stills, as used in grappa. One imparts flavour, the other yields a subtle elegance. Ron Millonario 10 Aniversario Reserva is presented in a bottle with transparent cap and a label which echoes the traditional design of the classic 15 Reserva Especial but graphically renewed and with a modern colour scheme. Warm amber in colour, it has an easy and never aggressive nose. Candied oranges, bergamot tea, vanilla and a hint of cola nut are its main aromas. At the palate, its lighter and fresher than the older expressions: mainly it tastes of chestnut and acacia honey, candied oranges and citrons and sultana raisins. Slightly hidden, but still evident, are nuts, chocolate, desiccated plums and apricots. Only at the end a peppery sting from the alcohol becomes just noticeable.

Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva is a blend of 20 per cent light column distilled rums with 80 per cent pot still rums aged up to 12 years, a proportion of which are rums from exceptional barrels which are used in Master Blender Tito Cordero's secret preparation. Although he won't reveal the ages of the rums used he has disclosed that he mixes these exceptional rums with a little cane sugar prior to blending with the main body of rums to amplify their flavour so they impart a slight touch of sweetness and a distinctive flavour to the finished rum.
