Produced from Nero d'Avola and dried Nero d'Avola grapes grown on the best sites in western Sicily. The grapes are dried in two historical ways, depending on their origin. Some grapes are left to hang and dehydrate on the vine while others are hand harvested and left to dry on racks for 15 days. The wine is vinified in a very gentle way allowing the wine to display both intensity of flavour and early approachability. The lavish fruit flavours of damson, black cherries and black currants match very well with rich meat based sauces.

Save the vines and enjoy a gorgeous, rich red! Poggioreale used to be an important wine village in Sicily. It was where Dino Taschetta grew up, like generations of his family before him. After an earthquake reduced Poggioreale to ruins in 1968, a new town was built further down the hill and the vineyards above the village, the highest and oldest in Sicily, were then neglected for decades. Now, with many of the island’s oldest Nero d’Avola vines grubbed up, there’s even more reason to treasure what’s left. Dino recently returned to the family estate and began to restore the vineyard. His first vintage was 2017 and he was in urgent need of a customer. Our Buyer tasted the wine and reserved it all. A year later, we’ve returned for more.

It’s 100% grown in South Australia, but as winemaker Steve Grimley says, this lavish wine is Italy meets Portugal Down Under. It blends Italy’s famous Nero d’Avola (40%) and Sangiovese (10%), with Portugal’s Touriga (20%), adding in luscious Durif (20%) and inky Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). (Yes, Durif and Cabernet were originally French, but they’ve been here long enough to be considered true blue Aussies, so we’re not going to quibble.) “No fewer than 4 varieties join forces in this tiny-batch red. VINE 100% Nero dAvola. Grapes coming from the hills around Agrigento, the best area for this kind of grapes. VINIFICATION Traditional, with control of temperature and with frequent mixing of skins and must. CHARACTERISTICS Wine with a great body and form, radiating a deep red colour. The nose is young and fairly closed showing dark fruits and cassis, the palate is fresh with a good density and finely grained tannins, nice finish. ACCOMPANIMENT Red meat, game and seasoned cheeses. Recommended serving at a temperature of 18°C in large glasses.
