Our customers know that it's hard to beat Portugal for flavour and value. So we were particularly excited about this new discovery. Vilarissa Valley is made by the Van Zellers – the family who founded the great Quinta do Noval in 1715. They're renowned for the quality of their winemaking, not only for world class vintage port, but also a red rated as one of the greatest of the last century. For their new Vilarissa Valley, the team sourced grapes from the high, warm Alto Douro, to source local grapes with peerless levels of richness and concentration. The result is a Black Red with velvet smoothness and richness. Gorgeously flavoursome and finished in port barrels for extra spice. An absolute classic that pairs perfectly with steak.

Emmanuel and Thierry Delaille quietly go about their business producing true, supple wines from the clay and limestone plains of Cheverny in the central Loire. Having worked with the brother’s great-value Sauvignon Blanc for years now, we have turned our attention to the Domaine's tasty Pinot Noir that comes from a small, 1.5-hectare a plot of 10–20-year-old vines. Like its white sibling, this is all tank-fermented and aged. It has plenty of substance to complement the juicy fruit and crunchy redcurrant and pomegranate flavours. It's plump, vibrant palate accompanies a mouth-watering freshness that calls for another sip (or another glass, or another bottle!)

This fine, silky Sicilian barrel-matured blend blends a little juicy Cabernet with Nero d’Avola from high old vineyards. Nero d’Avola is one of the hero grapes of Sicily. Much of it was grown around the island’s high village of Poggioreale. One prime vineyard belonged to Dino Taschetta’s grandfather. Here he grew fruit with deep, rich flavours that greatly impressed the young Dino. Disaster struck, however, in 1968 when an earthquake hit the area. The vines were abandoned, but today Dino is restoring the vineyard to its former glory. He uses these Nero d’Avola grapes to make his much loved Tenuta Fenice wines, adding to this fine Riserva a portion of juicy Cabernet and ageing it all in barrel. Now with three years’ maturity, this Riserva has gathered complex, savoury, smoky tobacco and spice notes to flatter the dark cherry flavours. Perfect with roast lamb.

If you’ve never tried a red from the Cévennes, you’re not alone. This wild, remote region is best known as the setting for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Travels with a Donkey. Our southern French wine scout, Mark Hoddy, lives locally and is a big fan of the area’s fresh, vibrant reds – and he’s keen for them to gain the recognition they deserve. He discovered this particular gem while hiking along Stevenson’s famous route – now the GR70. Brimming with aromas of wild herbs and plum liqueur, it really does deliver a taste of ‘bottled poetry’ (to borrow a phrase from Stevenson).
