Far from its traditional home in Spain the Tempranillo grape has found favourable growing conditions in a number of premium regions around Australia. This wine, from an old single vineyard near Young, displays earthy aromas of star anise and baked blueberry with rich rum and raisin notes. I grew up in the Canberra region and my grapes were carefully picked by hand, only the best will do so naturally I was aged in French oak. The Garnacha Blanca is from Clos Ibai’s young vines, planted in 2014 and sitting at 400m elevation on the clay/limestone soils of Baños de Ebro. These vines are now certified organic. Grapes were hand-picked, and whole-clusters were pressed to stainless steel for fermentation. Maturation was for eight months in inox tanks on lees.
