A cheeky, fun name for a mighty tasty tempranillo that doesn't take itself too seriously. Lays the foundations with deep-purple hues and a bouquet of sunny blackberries, cherry, red licorice and vanilla with a kick of spice. It fairly bounces in the mouth, but there is a serious side, too, with a solid concentration of fruit and structure built around well-crafted tannins. The wondrous complexity of aged Rioja is pure magic in a glass. It’s deep, opulent and wildly evocative all at once. This ‘reserva’ from Bodegas Altanza had the benefit of extended ageing before release, making sure all its components were perfectly integrated and beautifully assembled. This one reminds us of Nana’s Christmas Pudding. There’s all that compact, dried fruity flavour, enriched with winter spices and no holds barred brandy infusion. There’s more, too. Chocolate, allspice, tobacco, jamon iberico… we could go on! There’s room for more time in the cellar too - nice to know there’s no rush here. Yum.
