Chateau du Moulin-à-Vent dates back to 1732 and gave its name to the appellation when it was created in 1936. The estate has 37 hectares of vines across the appellation’s finest terroirs on mostly granitic soils rich in iron oxide, copper and manganese. This is a single-site Gamay from the 4.4ha Croix des Vérillats vineyard, which neighbours La Rochelle and was planted at 10,000 vines per hectare in the 1950s.

Gamay is the extremely attractive grape that makes France’s Beaujolais so very appealing. You don't often see it in Australia but when you do you wonder why. Chris Coulter practices minimum intervention with his Coulter Wines enterprise, sourcing grapes mainly from the Adelaide Hills. This is “… charming and inviting on the nose with raspberry, sweet strawberry, floral and subtle spice aromas, leading to a silky-smooth palate offering youthful fruit flavours with silky texture and fine-grained tannins, making it delightfully drinkable.” (Sam Kim Wine Orbit). “… simply a delicious lightweight fresh red, a perfect summer drink. Dark, complex and vibrant! This is a cracking example of Morgon Beaujolais, just the second time that a Beaujolais has been included in Decanter's 'Best in Show' selection. This is a complete world-beater of "astonishing charm". A complex array of black, red and purple fruits, velvet-like tannins, with a fleshy, fullness to the palate. This is a deeply elegant wine but not one without power. The weight of this wine is dictated by a dense core of blackberry, cherry and blueberry whilst the natural acid and silky tannins build a gorgeous texture and build to phenomenally long finish. This is a pristine wine, aged completely in concrete with zero reduction, it's all about the purity of the fruit that comes off the world-famous vineyards of Morgon.

Brouilly is the largest and furthest south of the Beaujolais crus. It has a good south eastern exposure, at the bottom of the Saône Valley at an altitude of 200 to 300 metres. The subsoil consists of granite debris and blue-tinged schist. This also ranked the full 5 stars in my abbreviated-for-iPad rating system! A delicious example of this gamay-based light red from southern Burgundy. Raspberry and plum aromas are direct and fruity, and the palate is light with a lingering, fragrant aftertaste.
