Spinifex was started in 2001 with the opportunity to source some great old vine Mataro growing in deep white drift-sand on the Barossa Valleys Western Ridge. Owned by husband and wife team, Peter Schell and Magali Gely, their focus is on regional wines from the traditional Mediterranean grape varieties that have been grown successfully in Australia for over 150 years - Shiraz, Mataro, Grenache, Cinsault, Carignan, Ugni Blanc, Grenache Gris, Marsanne and Semillon. They aim to make wines that display signatures of vineyard provenance and vintage, show regional typicity and have a consistent thread of 'house style' that reflects their preferences and experiences with wine. The Spanish fieasta is here – crack out the Tempranillo (tem-prah-ni-yo) and serve up the chorizo. My forefathers were from Spain, but I am a local through and through. I grew up in the Canberra region and my grapes were carefully picked by hand, only the best will do so naturally I was aged in French oak. I have a curvaceous medium body, a rich mouth feel and plum fruit flavours with earthy hints of mature spice and black tea tannin.

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot has developed into a multi-layered wine which shows perfumed flavours of berries and blackcurrant from the Cabernet Sauvignon and cherries and plum from the Merlot. The blend has a lush texture and tannins that give the wine a very smooth mouth-feel.

Our Merlot is full of fruit flavours, yet a smooth and soft wine. With a deep purple colour, it has a nose of sweet plum and vanilla. It displays a rich spectrum of plum and spiced berries fruits and a lingering finish of warm spices.

Made from Merlot this wine has been carefully liquered and disgorged after 5 years to produce an opulent sparkling with complexity and a fine bead.
