This wine shows the style of the vintage and quite likely the impact of the small crop. In such years, Cabernet Sauvignon in particular, has a complex but somewhat subdued nose, where the wine hints of the underlying power and complexity but takes years to reveal its true colours. So here we see smouldering red currant, black currant and mulberry, with a floral, violet lift, sitting over cedar and tar. On the palate there is concentration and length - dark fruits combining with firm tannin and leather and tarry notes.

La Dame de Montrose, first vintage 1983, is the highly-regarded second wine of Chateau Montrose, the St. Estephe deuxième cru (second growth). Montrose has a little more than 90ha of vines, the entire site overlooking the Gironde. The vineyard is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Around 50% (or less) of the crop goes to make the grand vin and around 30% (or more) goes into La Dame de Montrose. (The rest is used elsewhere or sold in bulk.) In good years La Dame de Montrose is considered a bargain, in the best years it stands alone as a great wine. The Dame de Montrose herself is the late Yvonne Charmolüe, who ran the estate from 1944 to 1960.

Planted in 1946, the old Walton Grenache block is a monument to the history of the Clare Valley. Dry-grown bush vines were planted in terra rossa soils, allowing excellent drainage at elevation and with an aspect which captures the late summer sun. This wine is a pure expression of Clare Valley Grenache. Aromas of strawberry, dark cherries (almost Cherry Ripe), cedar-spice with hints of sandalwood. The palate is silky smooth and vibrant, redolent with red cherries, red plums, blood orange and chocolate. The finish is long, expressive and youthful. Plenty behind it to cellar into the medium term and possibly more. "Youthful, vibrant red in the glass. Exotic aromas of five spice, cola, blueberry, dried herbs and red cherry. Flavours are mid-weighted, rich and fleshy. There’s plenty of red and blue fruit drive, supple and caressing tannins and bouncy, zingy acidity keeping all in check. The wine is gorgeously fruited and fragrant on the nose showing dark fruit richness with smoked game, vanilla, chocolate tart and cedar characters. The palate is concentrated and wonderfully weighted, delivering fabulous fruit intensity and stylish oak infusion, backed by fine chalky tannins, finishing superbly long and sturdy. At its best: now to 2025.

The Jim Barry McCrae Wood is a fine example of the bold Clare Valley Shiraz style. Intense and concentrated, it is well worth putting away for five years at least!

This is the flagship Cabernet of the Jim Barry stable. Ripe black fruits combined with a beautifully distinct earth, leather aromas with hints of dried fruits and sweet mulch.

Labegorce is found just north of the town of Margaux, opposite Chateau Lascombes. It produces wines that are often favourably compared to its neighbouring classified Margaux Growths, but available for considerably less of an investment. Its instantly recognisable and iconic chateau was constructed in 1821, and the modern estate was purchased by Hubert Perrodo in 1989, now managed by his daughter Nathalie. The wine is typically made up of at least 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by slightly less Merlot and a small balance of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Soils here are primarily sandy gravel with small amounts of limestone.
