In The Cellar during the fermentation a constant work of pumping over is manually carried out; the maceration can last between 30 and 60 days according to the vintage and it is carried out in stainless steel (under a controlled temperature) with the technique of “submerged cap”. This technique consists in the closure of the superior part of a tank with oak boards placed in a parallel manner. Then, the steel tank is filled leaving the skins (“the cap”) submerged in the wine: this allows a very elegant passage of the noble substances contained in the skins. The malolactic fermentation and the aging are made in Austrian oak barrels of 30 HL not roasted in order to preserve perfumes and qualities typical of the native earth.

(100%NEBBIOLO) Vigna Sant’Anna is our greatest vineyard: one hectare of Nebbiolo planted in the Sixties by our grandfather, Giovanni Porello. This is where our Roero Vigna Sant’ Anna was born. We have kept it exactly the way it was: steep, with narrow spaces between the rows. Everything is done exclusively by hand, we even cut the grass by hand, and we have chosen to tend the vineyard and make the wines the way grandpa Giovanni did. We are on a hill 350 metres above sea level, in sandy lime soil, typical of the Roero district, exposed due south. The grape yields are very low. We manage to harvest about 6.0 tonnes, which correspond to about 4000 bottles. If we had to compare this wine to music, it would be jazz. Ruby red with garnet highlights that evolve with age; intense, ethereal scent of ripe fruit with notes of rose and blackberry, enriched with vanilla, cocoa and spices; elegant, genteel, fruity and mineral, with crisp tannins that predict excellent longevity.

Luciano Sandrone crafts wines of profound integrity, purity and deep expression. The Valmaggiore vineyard in the Roero hills, on the left bank of the Tanaro river, is one of the best historic sources of origin and quality. Already in the nineteenth century, the Nebbiolo grapes grown in this vineyard were so highly regarded that they dictated the price for the entire territory.

100% Nebbiolo from the village of La Morra. Made using grapes from two south and south-east facing plots, one planted in 1948, the other in 1989. Soil composition is marna stone with clay and sand. Maceration takes place on skins for 4-5 days in rotary fermenters with temperature control. After fermentation the wine is aged in (225l) French oak barriques for 24 months. After more than 45 vintages, Elio Altare, grandson of founder Giuseppe, passed the torch to his daughter Silvia, who produces some of the very best modern Barolos Piedmont has to offer.

ELIO ALTARE, Barolo DOCG The Elio Altare Barolo is a blend of Nebbiolo grapes from the La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga dAlba and Barolo sub-regions. Only 800-850 dozen bottles are produced each year from vineyards planted on south and south-east facing slopes in the late 1900s. The vineyards, on various soil types, are farmed organically, but along traditional lines. The grapes are crushed and then macerated on skins for 4-5 days in temperature-controlled rotary fermenters before fermentation using indigenous yeasts. The wine is matured for 24 months in French oak barriques before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The Elio Altare Barolo shows an intense ruby-red colour with hints of garnet. On the nose fresh scents of small red fruits, raspberry, redcurrant and wild roses evolve into licorice and spice notes. The palate is typically warm, elegant and persistent, with soft tannins and a long finish.
