About 20 years ago, Scipioni blew critics away with his original Il Papavero – a humble ‘vino da tavola’ that offered near boundless drinking pleasure and astonishing value for money. Since then, he’s expanded the range, with every new release always offering the discerning drinker plenty of flavour for the money. And this mouthwatering Rosato – rosé continues that trend. It’s crafted from Nero d’Avola, a southern Italian variety that’s normally used to make big, juicy reds. Scipi sourced his Nero in vineyards planted on slopes overlooking the sea, where cooling breezes contributed to this wine’s irresistible freshness. The perfect aperitif.

If you’re looking for a lusciously rich red with warmth and depth, Double Gold Pillastro Primitivo is hard to beat. The wine comes from the Salento region in Puglia, the sun-drenched heel of Italy’s boot, where the prized local variety Primitivo thrives. It’s from Cantine Due Palme, a winery founded by local hero Angelo Maci. He started over 30 years ago by championing small, independent growers. Back then, he worked with just 15 – today, there are over 1,000. But it wasn’t just the growers Angelo helped save. He also preserved the ancient traditions and almost extinct grape varieties that make southern Italian wines so characterful and flavourful. Now in his 80s, he’s handed winemaking over to his grandson, Francesco Fortunato. And this latest vintage is tasting as good as ever. Francesco uses fruit from old vines, which produce fewer grapes but have far more concentration and intensity Think spiced plum, raspberry and a plush, velvety richness. The result is a gloriously smooth red that’s perfect with spicy tomato pasta, hearty stews or a cosy night in.

Fourth-generation winemaker Laurent Guillot infuses his family’s Burgundian flair into this rosé from his Languedoc estate. With a family estate rooted in Burgundy and Beaujolais, Laurent Guillot could easily have stayed in this prestigious part of France and focused on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. However, he was keen to look further afield to the vineyards of better-value southern France. And that’s where he’s stayed, coaxing out delicate fruit elegance from the likes of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. Chais du Moulin is a delicate rosé, with the most delicate of blushes made from a 50/50 blend of Cinsault and Grenache, not unlike you’d find in the finest estates of Provence. With zesty red berry and citrus fruit, this is a very pretty pink, ideal as an apéritif or with charcuterie, white fish and lighter dishes.
