Angove make wine from all over South Australia, but McLaren Vale is one of their favourite stomping grounds. John Quarisa, aka Johnny Q, is a terrific winemaker, creating wines that, like him, can be lively and highly charged. In his Caravan wine series, he likes to think of a grape that changes in style as it travels. So that here, Sauvignon Blanc grown in his Riverina vineyards produces a wine still with loads of grassy fresh zip, but along the way, has developed more tropical fruit flavours too. That is peach, pineapple and passionfruit! He insists on night harvested grapes to ensure lots of bright fresh flavours and cool ferments them for the same reason. This wine previously won a Gold medal and we think the 2021 vintage is tasting just as good – it's a fridge-door-must! Chill down and enjoy as a glass on its own or with spicy Thai dishes.

Sevenhill was originally set up in 1851 when the Jesuits who settled in the area planted the Clare Valley’s first vines to produce sacramental wine. The estate’s wines, along with its old stone winery, stately St Aloysius’ Church, College building and spacious gardens has made the Sevenhill name famous. So much so that they have recently won the Gourmet Traveller Award for best Large Cellar Door in the Clare Valley! Ray Jordan gives their 2021 Malbec a solid 92pts, "Malbec is a variety that does rather well in Clare, especially as a major blending component with cabernet. Still this one does it solo, and it does it well. Lots of the distinctive red floral fruits on the nose have that stamp of malbec. Bright and alive on a high energy palate with plenty of ripe red fruit characters with chalky tannins and understated oak in support."

Irvine Estate is home to Barossa vineyards that date back to 1867. The estate is famous for its majestic Merlot but Irvine Estate is sending ripples around the industry with its old-vine Shiraz as well. Indeed, an Irvine Shiraz impressed recently by winning a Trophy for the BEST Barossa Shiraz at the Barossa Valley Wine Show, ahead of BIG Barossa names like Teusner, Grant Burge, Peter Lehmann, St Hallett and Thorn Clarke! RedHeads aren't shy of creating a stir, all in the name of top winemaking. And Harmonie Chardie really rocks! Since starting off in 2002, Redheads have blazed a trail to become one of Australia’s leading sustainable cellars – masters of small-batch, eco-friendly winemaking. They've won 8 trophies and over 200 Golds for their wines, including two for the debut release of Harmonie Rox. All the grapes come from grower Jack Bursten’s unique Coonawarra vineyard. It was originally planted by the late, great Wayne Stehbans – twice winner of Australia’s most prestigious wine Trophy, the Jimmy Watson. So he knew a thing or two about growing top grapes! And it really shows in the wine. Fermented in part new French oak, it's creamy, spiced and fruity.

Moonlighters captures the very essence of the RedHeads concept. Right at the beginning, when RedHeads started in the McLaren Vale, a handful of dedicated, rule-breaking, young winemakers, with a day job at the big corporations, would arrive at RedHeads studio early evening, down a cold beer, then start on crafting a ‘real’ wine, with all the unbridled passion you’d expect from the newly qualified winemaking elite. The RedHeads Moonlighters White is a beautiful blend of rich Chardonnay and aromatic Viognier, with a full nose featuring struck match characters and summer stone fruit. The textured palate hints at apricot nectar, spice and subtle nutty notes, balanced by a mouthwatering acidity.

Allinda is a tiny Yarra Valley estate, and you won't find their wines in too many places, because the quantities are so small. But when you do find them, make sure you stock up, because they are really wonderful. This sumptuous Syrah really impresses with medium to full bodied intense ripe flavour and natural acidity. Ripeness of fruit in the warmish 2016 February has lifted the flavour profile into the mulberry and plum zone so expect less white pepper than other Yarra Valley Syrahs. Allinda has kept it simple with healthy soils, healthy vines, some of the better old school practices, a dash of modern technique and a whole lotta good old winemaking sense.
