One of the benchmarks of Barossa Shiraz, Peter Lehmann's Stonewell is a classic example of the rich concentrated old vine style. While bold on the palate, there is always an inherent complexity to the Stonewell that enables it to be compared with all of the great Australian wines produced today.

Located in High Eden, a sub-region of the Barossa, approximately 550 metres above sea level, Mountadam was originally established in 1972 by the late David Wynn for his winemaking son Adam. Since 2005, it has returned to being a family owned and run winery, with David and Jenni Brown overseeing its success. The wine is named after David’s father, Milton Brown. Traditionally known as the best Cabernet or Cabernet blend from the Estate the 2021 vintage saw this wine as a straight Cabernet Sauvignon due to the high quality of a single block. “Deep crimson and packed with bramble-edged blackberry, blackcurrant and black cherry fruits. Hints of brown spice, violets, briar, licorice, cedar, sage and vanilla bean. There's a lovely density with great tension between that High Eden mineral line and the ripe black fruits with fine, granite-dust tannins... that fruit weight is impressive. 95pts. With over 150 years of heritage and a National Trust classification, the vineyards of Tahbilk produce some of the most interesting wines in Australia. This wine is named after the first generation of Purbrick's custodians; Eric Stevens who purchased the property in 1925. Fruit for this wine comes from vines planted in 1933 and 1937.

A precise palate of harmonious oak teamed with intense stone fruit, citrus and flint like palate, with a long flowing texture leading to fine acidity and spiced oak nuances.

A raft of high scores for this great value Barossa Shiraz from winemaker Jason Schwarz, who set up Schwarz Wine Company in 2001. This is the third release of The Grower Shiraz – a tribute to the many growers of Barossa including his parents whoare grape growers in Barossa’a Bethany. "Lifted scents of red cherry, juicy satsuma plum and blueberry are laced with hints of ginger spice, cola, charcuterie, violets and a whisper of earthy loam. The palate follows on with a subtle mocha thread, spicy, plummy fruits, fine, sandy tannins and a swell of spice and earth on the finish. d'Arenberg's Innocent Weed McLaren Vale GSM is a very tasty – and very moreish 92pt, Great Value drop. As Marcus Ellis writes in The Halliday Wine Companion, it is: "buoyantly fruitful… with notes of boysenberry, blackberry gel, anise pastille, blueberry, graphite, violet, iris, mint and wild raspberry, but it’s more contained, ripeness à point. The strut of tannin is a proprietary character, and they have considerable pull, but they will soften, and the fruit is up to the challenge. Give it a little time, but it's a fine drink" (Halliday). It's named for the rather invasive weed that grows in the same soil as the estate's Grenache – that given its throrns and numerous seeds is actually far from innocent. In 1912, horse-fanatic Joseph Osborn sold his beloved stables and horses and bought the family the d'Arenberg estate in premium McLaren Vale. “d’Arenberg kept its 100+yo heritage while moving into the 21st century with flair. At last count, the d’Arenberg vineyards have 40 varieties planted, as well as more than 50 growers in McLaren Vale. Its considerable portfolio of richly robed red wines, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and grenache are the cornerstones. The iconic 5-level Cube cellar door offers a range of wine experiences including a restaurant and a wine sensory room” (James Halliday). You'll always spot a d'Arenberg wine with its bold red stripe on the label.

Battle of Bosworth started conversion to organic in 1995. Now, fully organic certified, they have a significant holding of 20 years and older vines. Their Puritan Shiraz is modelled on the young Tempranillos that come out of Rioja in Spain – no oak, just straight into bottle, so the fruit flavours really shine. (And they really do shine!) No added preservatives make this a top choice for the sulphur-sensitive.
