2015 Clarendon Hills Onkaparinga Grenache, Purpled crimson. Magically entwined with elegant hints of cherry, raspberry, terracotta, cocoa, walnut, and Turkish delight. The flourishing perfume continues to rise with an ever-present core appearing as the seamless spine. Harmoniously, these characters gracefully nuance, reinforce and offer evolution. A harmonious composition of spice, fruit, glycerin and chalky velvet produce an aristocratic experience that is nearly limitless in its depth of expression. The palate is bright and taught with natural acid however it is incredibly layered and deeply concentrated with silky smooth extract. The impressive purity of the fruit, alone , ushers superlatives however it is the fine boned and seamlessly structured palate, coupled with an air of effortless power that remains the most haunting element to this exceptional old vine Grenache.

Bin 138 draws its inspiration from the wines of the southern Rhône Valley of France, where Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (or Mourvèdre) are blended in varying proportions to create full-bodied wines possessing rich and heady perfume. Each year fruit for Bin 138 is sourced from old Barossa Valley vineyards (some more than 100 years old) and after fermentation the wine is matured for 12 to 15 months in seasoned oak hogsheads.. Bin 138 is defined by its distinctive plum, raspberry pastille and underlying spicy notes. The first vintage release of this blend was the 1992 and early vintages were labelled ‘Old Vine’. Grenache in all its glory. Red fruits proudly lead the charge: raspberries, cranberries and pomegranate. Fragrant coulis on a summer berry pudding. Ferric notes of steel wool and cordite allude to the iron-rich clay soil upon which the vines prosper in the Barossa Valley. Charcuterie aromas of Jamón ibérico and Mojama dry cured tuna notes add an interesting slightly saline nuance. Rubbed olive leaves, sumac spice and ginger peel aromas round out a very enticing nose. The three great Barossa red varietals are Mataro, Shiraz and Grenache. Blended well they produce wine full of fruit, complexity, spice, drink-ability and age-ability. These varieties arent afraid of the sun and dry climates, so they thrive in the northern sub-regions of the Barossa. The grapes for this wine are a combination of youngish, mature and older vines, all grown by the Hoffmann family. The Hoffman and OCallaghan family's history of growing grapes and making wines has developed into a strong trust over the decades. Its this long-term commitment, respect for each other, the region, and its people I feel is instrumental to making the Barossa proudly stand out from other wine regions. Clos Saouma Arioso Blanc, Châteauneuf-du-Pape This is sourced entirely from the Lieu-dit of Pierredon and 100% Grenache Blanc. Its vinified the same way as the Magis see above however the élevage is just one single 500 litre demi-mud for 36 months on full lees, no racking/sulphur for the full period.

MUNDA WINES Ngadjuri and Peramangk Country Grenache, Barossa Valley, Eden Valley Munda chooses minimal intervention in the winery, and prefers to bottle relatively early to reflect the brightness of their wines. The use of wild ferment, a combination of older French oak and stainless steel for maturation gives the wine pretty and immediately expressive, multi layered aromas of raspberry, dried cherries, lifted spices and rhubarb. Medium bodied with layers of tannins and savoury earthy flavours balanced with textured waves of spicy fruit. Complex, soft on the palate with a fineness and elegance counterbalanced with generosity and depth of texture that speaks of its munda (land or country).
