Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Paul Avril Clos des Papes is a wine producer in the Rhône Valley, making one of the most sought-after wines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC. The estate is made up of 24 small plots throughout the appellation totalling 32 hectares (79 acres). All of the 13 permitted grape varieties are grown in these vineyards, although Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah are the most important in terms of production. Picking is spread out to ensure maximum quality, and green harvests and strict berry selection ensures a low yield. Clos des Papes takes its name from one of its plots located near the ruins of the 14th Century Papal castle. There are two main wines associated with Clos des Papes: a red and a white wine. The red accounts for 90 percent of production and typically contains 65 percent Grenache, 20 percent Mourvedre and 10 percent Syrah, with the remainder made up of the other permitted Châteauneuf-du-Pape varieties. The wine is known for its finesse and elegance, and is one of the most important wines in the AOC. The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made up of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul, and is aged in stainless steel. Clos des Papes makes around 100,000 bottles a year, most of which is exported.

This is a very stylish numbe from Phil Sexton and his team. Stonefruit, melon and butterscotch characters are supported by vanillin oak and the palate is long and textured with a clean crisp finish.

Giant Steps Wombat Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir

The 16ha Wombat Creek Vineyard at Gladysdale is the highest in the Yarra Valley, at 420m. Planted in 1988 on north-east facing slopes, it was originally intended for sparkling wines, but has been transitioned to Pinot Noir (and Chardonnay) for table wine. The underlying iron-based red volcanic soil and rock contribute to wines with a distinctive soft yet long and firm palate. MV6 clone Pinot Noir grapes are hand-picked with 20% destemmed to the base of the vat for a pied de cuve ferment. The vats were then filled with whole bunches and closed to allow a semi-carbonic maceration to occur. Some foot-stomping takes place to release more juice and extend skin-contact time. After two weeks the wine is pressed to tight-grained, 228 litre, French barriques (about 18% new) for 10 months before blending and bottling without fining or filtration.The wine is noted for its soft texture and long, well-structured palate

Domaine Meo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges Aux Murgers

Domaine Méo-Camuzet, situated in the charming village of Vosne-Romanée in the esteemed Côte de Nuits region, stands as a revered wine producer. Renowned for crafting some of the most celebrated wines in the Côte d'Or, this prestigious estate boasts a collection of grand cru vineyards, including the esteemed Richebourg, Clos de Vougeot, Corton and Echézeaux. The heart and soul of Méo-Camuzet lies in its devotion to the Pinot Noir grape, which forms the foundation of their exceptional wines. These wines are revered for their delicately concentrated aromas, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship and unwavering dedication of the winemaking team. The origins of this esteemed estate can be traced back to Etienne Camuzet, a respected politician of the early 20th century who resided in Paris. Etienne offered portions of his estate to various sharecroppers for cultivation. It was not until 1986 when Jean-Nicholas Méo took charge of the estate that a strategic vision was set in motion to reclaim the vineyards from the sharecroppers. Jean-Nicholas aimed to regain control over the land, ultimately leading to the production of estate-grown fruit and bottling under the Méo-Camuzet label. An instrumental figure in this reacquisition process was the iconic Burgundy producer, Henri Jayer. For approximately four decades, Jayer had worked the domaine's land under his own label. Following his retirement in 1988, Jayer graciously provided guidance and advice to Jean-Nicholas during the process of reclaiming the vines. Notably, Méo-Camuzet now proudly holds 14 hectares (35 acres) of vineyards, including a portion of the revered Cros Parantoux Premier Cru site, made famous by Jayer himself. While Méo-Camuzet strives to farm its vineyards as organically as possible, the estate has deliberately chosen not to pursue certification. This decision allows the winemakers the freedom to adapt their approach based on the unique characteristics of each vintage. In addition to their prestigious grand cru wines, Méo-Camuzet also produces a selection of premier cru wines from vineyards along the Côte de Nuits. Furthermore, they offer a range of village-level and Bourgogne wines, ensuring a diverse and exciting collection. Nuits St. Georges Aux Murgers is a wine that requires caution to avoid overpowering its character. Planted between 1965 and 1972, the vineyards produce early-ripening grapes with remarkable acidity. Situated between Vosne and Nuits-St-Georges, the vineyard benefits from an ideal location on the lower part of the hill, facing east. The soil once destoned is fine with sandy elements at the top. Nuits St. Georges Aux Murgers exemplifies the delicate balance between technique and terroir, offering a distinctive and elegant expression of its unique character. The Domaine Meo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges Aux Murgers 2020 is a wine of depth and complexity that requires patience and understanding. With its powerful personality and the promise of a remarkable evolution, it is a wine that holds great potential and will reward those who can appreciate its journey.

Jim Barry Single Vineyard Eastern Ranges Cabernet Sauvignon

The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of Australian table wine, graduating with the 17th diploma in winemaking in Australia. He went on to become the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business, which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the custodian of Jim Barry Wines is their second son Peter, who joined the family winery in 1977 and now works along side his own sons, Tom and Sam. The Barry family name is synonymous with the Clare wine region. The Barry family believe that great wine is made in the vineyard and as such, are committed to owning their own vineyards. This control allows them to develop outstanding fruit quality and flavour which are then retained during winemaking. Over the last 60 years the family has worked to establish a mosaic of sites - 17 vineyards covering 320 hectares in the Clare Valley and two vineyards covering 35 hectares in the Coonawarra. Each unique in soil profile, climate, aspect and elevation. Each year, the Jim Barry winemakers identify distinctive parcels of fruit the reflect the vineyard from which they are grown. This small-batch project allows the creation of unique, vintage-specific wines that highlight the best fruit from vineyards owned by the family. This Cabernet was sourced from older Cabernet vines at the Lodge Hill property and shows the hallmark earthy characteristics of Clare Cabernet with elegant, fine tannins and vibrant purple fruit flavours. Louis Roederer Rosé Champagne

Louis Roederer remains one of the last 100% independent, family-owned Champagne Houses, presided over by seventh generation Frédéric Rouzaud. Under the stewardship of Chef du Cave, Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon these past two decades, Louis Roederer has become the largest Biodynamic Domaine in Champagne with their 242 hectares located in the three most important sub-regions: Montagne de Reims (La Montagne); Vallée de la Marne (La Rivière) and Côtes des Blancs (La Côte). In March 2021, following 20 years of environmental transition, 115 hectares of the historic Louis Roederer family vineyard achieved organic certification. An extraordinary vintage which is also the year in which the Champagne region was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! 2015 followed the continental trend of that decade: a mild, wet winter and a hot, dry summer. The summer, hot and sunny, brought record-breaking temperatures and water stress. The second half of August brought some very welcome rain, giving the vines some much needed relief. Thanks to this fresh finish, the vines produced juicy, ripe and concentrated grapes. Our ambition for this vintage? To capture the concentration which is the hallmark of this spectacular vintage! A rosé created by a long, gentle infusion of Pinot noir that extracts its juicy ripeness while preserving its tremendous saline freshness. In this process, some Chardonnay juices are added to the Pinot noir maceration, to ferment together and achieve the perfect integration of the two grape varieties.

Louis Roederer Collection 244 Non-Vintage

Louis Roederer is a highly respected Champagne producer located in the historic city of Reims. The renowned Champagne house, founded in the late 1700s, is still owned and operated by the Roederer family. Their signature style consists of an equal blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with a touch of Pinot Meunier, which comprises approximately one-fifth of the blend. Louis Roederer's most famous wine is Cristal, a prestigious Champagne that has captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts worldwide. The house was founded in 1833 and aimed to capture foreign markets, particularly Russia. Roederer became the wine of choice for the Russian royal family, and Cristal was created for Tsar Alexander II. Louis Roederer acquired grand cru vineyards in Champagne in 1845, which was unusual for the time as most houses were buying grapes from growers. Today, the Roederer vineyards encompass around 240 hectares of land, with around 25% managed biodynamically. This commitment to sustainable farming practices is a testament to the house's dedication to producing high-quality wines that are both delicious and environmentally responsible. Collection 244 NV is based from the 2019 vintage. It was a year of record-breaking temperatures brought by particularly intense heat waves. Dry and continental and of magnificent maturity, this year gave us wines that were dense and fresh, with a masterful balance, conducive to bringing out the powerful and luscious Collection character in the blend. This 244th Blend includes: - Perpetual Reserve - 36% (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016,2017,2018) - Reserve Wines Aged in Oak - 10% (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016,2017,2018) - 2019 Vintage - 54% The Louis Roederer Collection 244 NV is a remarkable champagne that captivates the senses from the moment it is poured. Its bright, golden hue with shimmering highlights is visually enticing, while the fine, lively mousse creates a delightful effervescence. The bouquet is both open and rich, exuding a wonderful freshness. It offers an explosion of ripe delicate fruit with intense notes of yellow fruit such as mirabelle plum from the Pinot Noir, complemented by the sweetness of citrus fruits like lemon meringue pie and delicate hints of white flowers specifically jasmine from the Chardonnay. As the wine opens up autolytic characters emerge evolving towards smoky roasted notes and the enticing aroma of freshly baked pastries.
