JEAN-PIERRE MOUEIX BORDEAUX rouge was inspired by the founders early mission: when Jean-Pierre Moueix launched his wine merchant business in 1937, he sought to offer eminently drinkable and enjoyable wines that reflect a sense of place. Personally selected by Christian and Edouard Moueix, the Merlot grape offers depth and complexity, while Cabernet Franc brings structure and spice to the blend. Combined, these varietals produce wines of character and body while maintaining a unique suppleness. The wine shows ruby red with an intense, complex nose presenting notes of cherry, strawberry and blond tobacco. The palate is powerful and inviting with smooth, silky tannins.

This is a new-release, Gold-winning red from our friends at Appelsdrift winery in South Africa’s Robertson region. They have vineyards that follow alongside the railway track which runs from Ashton to Robertson. Indeed, it goes right through the property! The hot sunny climate and cool ocean breezes of the region are just perfect for growing healthy, ripe grapes that make lush, fruit-filled wines (it’s also a top spot for growing roses). This is a terrific blend of super, dark and juicy Merlot, Cabernet and Shiraz, part barrel aged to lend spice to the punchy plum and cassis fruit with hints of dark chocolate. Certainly a wine to open with a hearty, warming winter supper, but also top choice at a barbecue.

Two-time Gold-winning La Cuadrilla de Sobreño hails from Spain’s Toro – a region that’s been making wine for centuries but has only recently started getting recognition for its juicy, fruit-packed red wines. The region sits northwest of Madrid in Castilla y León, where winters are bitterly cold and summers scorchingly hot. Wines here used to be very high in alcohol (up to 16%), but producers now pick earlier to craft delicious, balanced, fruit-driven styles. This great-value red comes from Bodegas Sobreño, a family-owned cellar founded in the 1990s. Winemaker Oscar Martín leads the charge and has a cabinet full of awards to show for it. It’s made from Tinto del Toro – a local strain of Tempranillo with thicker skins that shrug off the summer heat. Expect generous black and cherry fruit in a hearty red that’s spot-on with comfort dishes – think shepherd’s pie or sausage and mash.
