Vietti Barolo Lazzarito Serraluna d’Alba

Vietti is a winery with a rich history spanning almost 150 years. Founded by Carlo Vietti in the late 1800s in the heart of the Langhe, on the highest point of the medieval village of Castiglione Falletto, the winery was transformed into a high-quality wine producer by Carlo's son, Mario Vietti, upon his return from living in the United States in 1917. In the 1950s, Alfredo Currado, oenologist and art lover, brought new intuitions to the winery, intertwining wine knowledge with art and culture. Vietti produced one of the first Barolo Crus in 1961 and the first vinification of Arneis in 1967. The wines were accompanied by Art Labels starting in 1974, making the Vietti brand an icon and standard-bearer of important revolutions. The winery's commitment, vision, culture and passion have contributed to its growth and recognition as one of the best Italian wine labels. The Krause Family purchased Vietti in 2016 and decided to extend the winemaking properties with new, renowned crus in the denomination of Barolo and Barbaresco. In 2023, the Heritage was taken over by the Krause Family, already owner of the Cellar since 2016 and standard-bearer of the new future of the Vietti brand. Vietti maintains its founding values and looks towards the future with even more promising and stimulating prospects, with each wine being the result of artisanal work and the profound understanding and interpretation of each individual terroir. Since 1974, Vietti wines have been adorned with specially-designed original works inspired by the wine of that particular vintage. These works include lithographs, xylographies, etchings, silkscreens and linocuts. The print run is the same as the number of bottles produced and the first hundred labels are signed by the artist. Each work is only used once, just for the wine of that vintage. Since the presentation of the 1982 Barolo Villero in 1988, the artist’s labels have been dedicated exclusively to the wines grown on this great vineyard. The idea for these unique labels was conceived by Alfredo Currado and a group of artist friends over a bottle of Barolo Rocche. They believed that wines like these deserved to be graced with labels unlike any other and the idea began to take shape the following day. These art labels have become an iconic part of the Vietti brand, adding a touch of art and culture to their already exceptional wines. Barolo is a renowned red wine produced in the Piedmont region of Italy. The wine is made from Nebbiolo, a small, thin-skinned red grape varietal known for its high acidity and tannins. Harvesting of Nebbiolo grapes generally takes place in late October, as it is one of the first varietals to undergo budbreak and last to be picked. Barolo wines are required to be solely composed of Nebbiolo, with no exceptions. The Barolo DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) is the highest classification for Italian wines and guarantees specific production methods and quality. Wines from the Barolo DOCG must be 100% Nebbiolo and aged for at least 38 months, with 18 of those months in wood barrels. This results in a wine with a unique flavor profile and exceptional quality. Vietti's Barolo Lazzarito is a premium wine made from grapes grown in the MGA “Lazzarito” vineyard in the municipality of Serralunga d’Alba. This fabulous amphitheatre-shaped plot has a south-western exposure and is situated at an altitude between 260 and 390 m asl. The soil is rich in limestone and clay, making it ideal for growing high-quality grapes. The average age of the Guyot-cultivated vines is 42 years, and there is a density of around 4500 plants per hectare. The Vietti Barolo Lazzarito Serraluna d’Alba 2019 is a stunning example of a Barolo D.O.C.G. wine made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. The grapes were harvested by hand on 09 October 2019 and underwent gentle pressing before fermenting for around four weeks in a steel tank, in contact with the skins. The wine was aged for around 30 months in oak barrels and for a small portion, barriques. This wine has an intense ruby-red color with garnet hues and an alluring and profound nose. Notes of hay, cut grass, tobacco, white pepper and wild mint emerge. On the palate, it is robust and potent, with a taut, mineral finish. As is typical of Serralunga, the tannins are stark, sharp and very profound. The sweet persistence of the finish is delightful. This wine pairs perfectly with game, red meats and cheeses. The Vietti Barolo Lazzarito Serraluna d’Alba 2019 is an exceptional wine that showcases the best of the Nebbiolo grape variety and the unique terroir of the Lazzarito vineyard.

Royal Tokaji Nyulaszo 1st Growth 6 Puttonyos Aszú

The fall of communism in Hungary saw many new beginnings, and one of note for wine lovers was the formation of The Royal Tokaji Company by wine-writer Hugh Johnson, and a consortium of foreign investors with the sole vision of revitalising the magnificent sweet wines of Hungary. The Royal Tokaji Company today is a benchmark for the noble wines of the region, from their 3 Puttonyos wines at around 60-90 grams per litre of residual sugar through to the intense Essencia at 450-850 grams, they are wines that offer the drinker a unique insight to one of the great wine styles of the world. In truly exceptional years Royal Tokaji selects the finest berries from its finest vineyards and carefully produces a few barrels of Single Vineyard Aszú. 2017 was such a year, just the eighth this century, showing exceptional richness, structure and backbone balanced by lively acidity - a truly volcanic vintage. Summer was hot, so we began the Aszú berry harvest in early September and continued to pick steadily in the ideal autumn weather. In particular October provided three textbook weeks for fine quality Aszú, with day after day of early morning mists, afternoon sunshine and drying winds. The Aszú wines show great structure, plenty of botrytis, depth and freshness with excellent complexity, all attributes of long ageing potential. The excellent Aszú berries with good structure and perfect botrytis were macerated in fermenting must for two days. After pressing and finishing fermentation in barrel the wines were filled into Hungarian oak casks in our extensive, deep underground cellars to mature for over two years. The final blends were carefully crafted in the spring of 2020. Bottled at 203.3 grams of residual sugar per litre. Nyulászó (meaning “a good place to catch hares”) is a celebrated First Growth vineyard overlooking the village of Mád. Its volcanic bedrock is overlaid with rich, brown clay interspersed with lighter rhyolite tuff, consistently producing racy, perfumed, elegant wines with a steely backbone. This wine is lively and elegant, highly perfumed on the nose with ripe peach and apricot on the palate balanced by silky acidity. The finish is long and incredibly complex.

Piper-Heidsieck Duo: Sauvage & Hors Serie

Piper-Heidsieck's roots trace back to Florens-Louis Heidsieck, who created the original company of Heidsieck & Co. Christian Heidsieck joined the venture alongside Guillaume Piper and once Florens-Louis died in 1828, the duo decided to continue the adventure side by side, founding Champagne Piper-Heidsieck. Émilien Boutillat offers a reflection on time with Brut Sauvage 1982 and Hors-Série 1982, presented in the Diptyque 1982 gift box, numbered, and released in a limited edition of 500 boxes. Offering more than a mere flashback, the Chief Winemaker proposes a particularly unique tasting: Émilien Boutillat shares a real reflection on time in his pairing of the two cuvées in one box. A dialogue between two facets of one vintage, of one blend, of one philosophy, revisiting bygone times, each with its own vision. The results of the 1982 harvest are considered amongst the most exceptional ever witnessed in the history of Champagne. The grapes grew under steady weather conditions. The results were irreproachable and the harvest abundant! The grapes, all varieties included, were in excellent condition and stood out for their nesse, equilibrium and grandeur, hallmarks of a great year in Champagne. The fruit of the same vintage, the same blend and dosage, Brut Sauvage 1982 and Hors-Série 1982 each boast a distinctive character, a result of their different ageing processes. There are two ways for a champagne to age: on lees or in a corked bottle following disgorgement. Disgorged in 1992, Brut Sauvage 1982 was cellared on lees for 10 years and cork-aged for 29 years. Hors-Série 1982 spent 39 years on lees before being disgorged in 2022. Tasting the two together offers a truly unique experience as these two cuvées showcase a new perspective on time, revealing different phenomenal sensations and precise generous aromas on the nose and the palate. Hors-Serie 1982 Tasting Note: With a pale golden robe, Hors-Série 1982 being recently disgorged present quite young, luscious notes of mirabelle plums, kumquats, dried pineapple, and fresh quince, with a touch of ginger and earl grey tea. Smoky accents of coffee beans and toast balance out the wine’s minerality. Brut Sauvage 1982 Tasting Note: Harbouring a golden robe and glints of copper, Brut Sauvage 1982 presents a clean, fresh structure and long finish. Initial accents of candied fruits, pastry notes of brioche and frangipane and a touch of vanilla and nutmeg pave the way to warm harmonies of chestnut honey, aged rum and Espelette pepper.

Brokenwood McLaren Vale Shiraz

Brokenwood are an icon of the Australian wine scene and arguably the greatest producer the Hunter Valley has ever seen. As they grew vineyards through Victoria & South Australia were acquired. This shiraz is from the premium viticultural region of McLaren Vale. For this vintage, the region had a lovely warm, fine growing season, allowing the fruit to be picked at optimum ripeness. The wine is matures for 12 months in French oak, brining out bright plum and spice aromas, carrying to the palate with fine, subtle tannins and a clean, long finish.

Clemens Hill Estate Chardonnay

Clemens Hill was founded over 20 years ago in a remarkable setting within the bucolic Coal River Valley. The wines of Clemens Hill are and will always be, an expression of the whims of nature inexorably bound to the wisdom of winemaking. Indeed, the pursuit of a vinous expression of place takes precedence over the pursuit of accolades, but perhaps as a result of that philosophy, over time the wines have become festooned with prizes and accolades. Clemens Hill vineyard nestles into the north-east facing slopes of the ancient glacial carving that is the Coal River Valley. It sits just 75m above sea level and is cooled by maritime valley breezes while capturing the bright crystalline sun. It enjoys both shelter and exposure. Rainfall is a capricious 500mm per annum, so it is supplemented with irrigation in times of stress. Flinty minerality with hint of nougat, white peach and mouth-watering lime citrus on the nose. A punchy, powerful palate with delicious salty caramel richness right at the end. On the finish, the fruit powers through and the acid hits a crystal clean note.

Domaine Faiveley Chambertin Clos De Bèze Ouvrées Rodin Grand Cru

The Domaine Faiveley Chambertin Clos De Bèze Ouvrées Rodin Grand Cru 2020 is a wine of immense complexity and depth, representing the very best of Burgundy's winemaking tradition. This Grand Cru is crafted with meticulous attention to detail by the skilled winemakers at Domaine Faiveley. Based in Nuits-St-Georges, the famous Domaine Faiveley was founded in 1825 and in more recent times, the domaine has greatly expanded its vineyards across the entire Côte d’Or. The grapes are entirely de-stemmed and fermented in a mix of new wooden vats for the top end wines and stainless steel for the lesser cuvées. Once notorious for being fairly austere, there has been less emphasis on extraction over the last ten years and the wines show increased freshness, purity of fruit and more judicious use of oak. A contender for one of the most improved domaines in Burgundy over the last decade. Coming from a "Vieilles Vignes" parcel (60 years old), "Les Ouvrées Rodin" is characterised by its elegant tannins and delicate structure. Marthe Sirieys, Erwan Faiveley's great grandmother, had family links with art amateur Maurice Fenaille. In 1885, the latter became Auguste Rodin's patron. In memory of the unique relationship with Auguste Rodin and as a hommage to the timeless works created by him, Domaine Faiveley names this new gem of the Côte de Nuits: "Les Ouvrées Rodin" The grapes are harvested and sorted by hand however the proportion of de-stemmed grapes and whole clusters varies depending on the vintage. The wines are punched down daily in order to extract colour, tannins and aromas from the skin of the grapes. After this wine undergoes a 19 day vatting period, the alcoholic fermentation is complete. The free-run wine is run off using a gravity system whilst the marc is pressed slowly and gently in order to extract an exceptionally pure press wine. Then, the wine is aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels (60% new oak and 40% one-wine barrels) which have been selected for their fine grain and moderate toast. Finally it is left to age in cellars at consistent, natural hygrometry and temperature. The vines for this wine were planted in 1966. Deep ruby red hue with purplish glimmers. The complex nose offers a combination of fruit, spice and floral notes. The lively palate displays exceptional tension, elegant tannins, a hint of white pepper and menthol notes. Les Ouvrées Rodin is an intense, deep, smooth, elegant and subtle wine and a perfect reflection the character of its historical terroir. Drink now or will age gracefully with careful cellaring until 2055.

Nick Spencer Gruner Veltliner

Nick Spencer Wines is a small Canberra based wine company dedicated to producing exceptional, hand crafted wines that honour their local landscape. Producing award winning wines for nearly two decades, Nick’s passion and remarkable talent for considered, quality wines is evident in every bottle. Following four years at the famed University of Adelaide campus, Nick was awarded a degree in Oenology in 2000. Nick has worked for notable producers across the industry, including Rosemount, Coldstream Hills, Madew Wines, Tertini Wines, and led the team at Eden Road Wines for almost a decade before starting his own label with Nick Spencer Wines. A proud Australian wine maker, Nick is particularly passionate about the beautiful NSW regions of Gundagai and Tumbarumba. His winemaking expertise have been widely recognised by the industry, in 2009 Nick was honoured to win the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy. In 2011 Nick was a Len Evans Tutorial Scholar and a finalist in the Young Guns of Wine, that year he also won the National Wineshow Trophy for Best Shiraz. In 2014 Nick was a finalist in the Gourmet Traveller Wine Winemaker of the Year awards. His wines are regularly recognised by James Halliday, most recently being noted in the top ten best new wineries for 2019. Gruner Veltliner is a white grape variety native to Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic. In Australia Gruner is planted exclusively in cooler regions such as the Tumbarumba, The Adelaide Hills and Tasmania. Gruner is often compared to other varieties such Riesling with slightly more volume, texture and more approachable acidity. The texture and volume of this varietal means it is a very ver satile wine to match with foods. It is well suited to the bold flavours of Vietnamese cuisine such as summer rolls and noodle salads. Mexican foods such as fish tacos are also a great match and of course schnitzel and other fried foods. Nick Spencer Gruner Veltliner 2022 displays aromas of grapefuit, stone fruits, citrus and subtle spice. The palate is vibrant and juicy with lovely salivating acidity and texture.

Piper-Heidsieck Brut Champagne Non-Vintage

Piper Heidsieck NV is a champagne with great fruit, a good mouthful and a harmonious balance. Fresh fruit dominates the nose, predominantly pear and russet apple with a few hints of citrus fruits such as star fruit. The finish evokes flavours of fresh grapes, and a touch of aniseed, followed by a structured and a full-bodied finish. A juicy, fleshy pear and golden grape texture in the mouth, and the finish narrows to citrus and grapefruit flavours.

Sylvain Cathiard Bourgogne Aligote

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard stands as a testament to the dedication and passion of the Cathiard family. This small domaine, established by Sylvain Cathiard's grandfather in the 1930s, carries with it a rich history rooted in the legendary Domaine de la Romanee Conti and Domaine Lamarche. Sylvain's father, Andre, lovingly nurtured the domaine from 1969 until 1985, when the reins were passed on to Sylvain himself. In the following years, Sylvain embarked on a journey to develop his own vineyards, renting parcels from his father and other vignerons. Soon after he acquired his father's original vineyards solidifying his commitment to the craft. In 2006, Sylvain's son, Sebastien joined him marking the beginning of a new chapter for the estate. Together, they formed Sylvain Cathiard et Fils, a collaboration that combines tradition with a fresh perspective. Since 2011, Sebastien has taken the helm, carrying on the family legacy while Sylvain enjoys a well-deserved retirement. Spanning across 5 hectares, the vineyards of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard grace the appellations of Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny. Of significant note is their tiny parcel in Romanée-St-Vivant, situated just below the iconic Romanee Conti. Here, they proudly hold the title of the smallest land-owner of this magnificent Grand cru. Every aspect of vineyard work is executed with meticulous attention to detail by Sebastien, his wife, and a dedicated team. Embracing organic principles, they prioritize the natural harmony of the vines, although certification has not been sought. When it comes to winemaking, Sebastien adopts a hands-off approach, allowing the wines to evolve naturally. Whole-cluster fermentation takes place, with the juice cold settled for approximately 10 days. The wines then undergo a skin contact period of 22 to 30 days. Maturation occurs over 18 months in oak barrels, sourced primarily from tonellerie Remond and Francois Freres. The percentage of new oak used varies across the appellations, with village wines aged in roughly 1/3rd new oak and 2/3rds of 1-year-old oak. Premier Crus see a balance of 50% new oak and 50% 1-year-old oak, while Grand Crus are aged in two new barrels and one one-year-old barrel. Since 2000, the wines have not been fined or filtered, allowing them to express their true character. Sebastien Cathiard's wines exude an unparalleled sense of harmony, with a soft and elegant texture that speaks to their finesse. Since taking over the domaine, Sebastien has listened attentively to those fortunate enough to taste alongside him. As a result, he has gradually reduced the percentage of new oak used for aging, allowing the fruit to shine with natural intensity and balance. The Vosne-Romanées, in particular, have garnered a reputation as some of the finest in the village.Each bottle from Domaine Sylvain Cathiard is a testament to the fully mature vineyards that have yielded fruit of exceptional quality. With a limited production of around 50 barrels in a good vintage, these wines are a true embodiment of passion, tradition and the pursuit of excellence. The Sylvain Cathiard Bourgogne Aligote 2022 is a brilliant addition to the Cathiard range, showcasing the unique character of this grape variety. Crafted from a small amount of Aligote sourced from vines in the Hautes Cotes, with 95% coming from 30-80-year-old vines in the village of Villers-la-Faye above Corgoloin, and the remaining 5% from vines in Nuits St Georges planted in 2011. In the glass, this wine reveals a bright and pure white hue that invites exploration. On the nose, enticing aromas of fresh apple, citrus and greengage captivate the senses, offering a refreshing and invigorating experience. It is a medium-bodied wine with a forward nature, displaying excellent depth and polish. Tiberio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colle Vota

The vineyards boast some of Italy's oldest grapevines, their roots intertwined with the ancient Roman times from which they draw inspiration. Tiberio proudly upholds the winemaking traditions passed down through the ages, ensuring that every bottle encapsulates the essence of the region and the unique characteristics of each grape variety. At Tiberio, the winemaking process is executed with meticulous care, with every step carefully considered and flawlessly executed. From the hand-harvesting of the grapes to the thoughtful selection of oak barrels for aging, no detail is overlooked. The result is a remarkable collection of wines that effortlessly showcase the true essence of the region. In the year 2000, Riccardo Tiberio stumbled upon a rare plot of Trebbiano Abruzzese vines, a discovery that would shape the future of the winery. Recognizing the potential of this find, he made the decision to acquire the land and dedicate it to producing single estate wines. Initially, a selection of indigenous and international grape varieties adorned the vineyards, but with time, the focus shifted to Pecorino and Trebbiano Abruzzese, reflecting the estate's unwavering commitment to quality and showcasing the unique characteristics of Abruzzo's native grape varieties. These factors combine to produce a truly unique Montepulciano wine. Interestingly, the Colle Vota vineyard thrives in cooler and even rainy vintages. The resulting Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines crafted from these grapes possess a refined and light character, reminiscent of Burgundy's Pinot Noir and Piedmont's Nebbiolo wines. Despite these influences, the wine retains its Montepulciano backbone and soul. Recognizing the exceptional quality of the Colle Vota vineyard, Tiberio has decided to bottle this wine separately, allowing it to shine as a distinct expression of both place and the potential of the Montepulciano grape variety. The vineyard was planted in 2000 using selections from the oldest Montepulciano vineyard on the property. This original Montepulciano clone has adapted to its specific environment, characterized by different soils, subsoils and a unique microclimate. As a result, a new Montepulciano biotype has developed, giving rise to a highly perfumed and refined wine. Tiberio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colle Vota 2019 is a wine that truly captures the essence of its unique terroir. Grown at an altitude of 350 meters (1200 ft) in a 1.6-hectare (4-acre) vineyard, this wine showcases the meticulous craftsmanship and dedication put into its production. The soil composition of limestone and marly-clay over a sandstone-rich bedrock contributes to the wine's character and complexity. The vines, trained using the Single Guyot method, have a planting density of 4,000 vines per hectare. With a yield of 28 Hl, the grapes are carefully hand-harvested to ensure optimal quality. During the winemaking process, only indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation in stainless steel tanks, which lasts for 20 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tank, further enhancing the wine's texture and flavour profile. The aging process occurs in tank, allowing the wine to develop and mature gracefully. Bottled without fining or filtration, the Tiberio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colle Vota 2019 undergoes additional aging in the bottle before release, allowing its flavors to harmonize and evolve. Upon tasting, this wine reveals intense and expressive flavors. Notes of yellow peach, sage, cedar, cinnamon, marzipan, spices and earthy soil come together in a highly complex and captivating bouquet. The mouthfeel is long, deep and creamy, filling the palate with refined, silky tannins and a subtle saline character. The finish is energizing and persistent, leaving a lasting impression. Crafted from 100% selections of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, transplanted to a higher single vineyard, this wine represents a specific biotype uniquely adapted to its microclimate.
