Ben Glaetzer Bishop Shiraz

The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family were some of the earliest recorded viticulturalists in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley. The irrepressible Ben Glaetzer is the driving force behind Glaetzer Wines. Ben graduated in winemaking from Adelaide University in South Australia after working at Barossa Valley Estate during school and university holidays. After travelling extensively throughout many of the worlds wine regions, Ben returned to the Barossa and joined the family company. Ben's ability to blend traditional winemaking techniques with a modern flair is reflected in the style of wines under the Glaetzer label. He makes unique, elegant wines with minimal intervention, which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossan. Along with the numerous trophies and awards for his wines, Ben's winemaking honours include being named the Qantas Young Winemaker of the Year in 2004 and Junior Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker in 2005. Glaetzer Bishop is a true expression of Barossa Shiraz that is elegantly structured with a long finish. Bishop is the family name of Colin's wife' Judith. Fittingly the sign of Venus, a symbol which has come to represent women and feminine energy, is the centrepiece of the Bishop label. In mythology, the symbol meant the Roman goddess Venus or her Greek equivalent Aphrodite. But the sign has also been linked back to ancient Egypt – a nod to Bishop’s link to Amon-Ra and Anaperenna. Grown on the Ebenezer vineyard on 35 to 120-year-old vines with a yield of 3 tonnes per hectare. The wine was fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters, with extended maceration to enable good tannin and development. This softened the wine and allowed it to be approached early. It was matured for 16 months in a mix of 40% new oak and 60% 2 to 3-year-old oak hogshead barrels (90% French, 10% American). The wine is elegantly structured with a long finish, making for another expressive and approachable vintage for Bishop. Flavours of black cherry, raspberry, olive, dried spice and black pepper are supported by balancing tannin. Mouth-filling and persistent to the finish, this is a fine wine. It can cellar for up to 10-15 years.

Clarence House Estate Block 1 Pinot Noir

Clarence House was built in 1830 on land which was originally the market garden for the city of Hobart. Present owner David Kilpatrick first planted vines on the north-east slopes of the property in 1998. Located in the foothills of the Meehan Ranges, halfway between Hobart and the Coal Valley, Clarence House Estate sits in a unique location atop Jurassic dolerite and basalt soils with low annual rainfall. The 2022 Clarence House Estate Block 1 Pinot Noir was produced by Anna Pooley and Justin Bubb at Pooley Wines. A combination of 114, 115 and 777 clones from the oldest vines on the estate. One third whole bunches of 777 were included, 20 days on skins, aged in a combination of new and old French oak puncheons for 11 months. This marks the fourth release of the Block 1 Pinot Noir. Floral, red and black fruits, forest elements and mixed spices. Seamless palate, textural yet buoyed by fresh, lively acidity and a long, tannin-infused finish. A great candidate for the cellar, yet equally enjoyable as a young, primary wine full of fruit and energy.

Cantina della Stazione Dolcetto d’Alba

Adelaide-born Dave Fletcher is a self confessed Nebbiolo addict. So much so that shortly after falling in love with Nebbiolo in 2006, Dave moved to Piedmonte in 2007 to explore his passion for Nebbiolo, and has since produced an outstanding range that is both characteristic of the Piedmont region and innovative in itself. Time spent making wine and absorbing local knowledge at Ceretto have only served to deepen his love of the region and it’s great wines. Now the proud owner of, and making wine in the old train station in Barbaresco, Dave’s passion has reached its pinnacle, and the wines show it! Produced in very small quantities, we are very excited to have a small allocation this year. Under the Cantina Della Stazione label, Dave Fletcher has produced a joyously succulent Dolcetta d'Alba. From 65 years old vines in San Rocco (Alba). Dave owns 1 hectare of vineyard, organically managed. Fully destemmed, fermented and aged in seasoned Burgundy barriques for 8 months. Unfined and unfiltered. Bright aromatics of cherry, plum and mulberry lead to flavours of tangy dark-stone fruits with a twist of herbaceous and earth notes. The finish is long and juicy with sleek tannins and abundant texture.

Farr Rising Shiraz

Farr Rising is already right up there when it comes to quality and excitement. The wines could barely boast better pedigree, with Nick Farr at the helm and impeccable fruit sources. These range from Pinot and Chardonnay grapes from the Farrs' own 2002 plantings to 35-year-old vines from 10km further down the Moorabool valley. Made in an earlier-drinking style than some of the By Farr range, the Farr Rising wines often go toe-to-toe with their illustrious label-mates. They represent some of the best-value terroir-driven wines available. This Shiraz fruit comes from an original By Farr site, planted in 1994 in black cracking clay soil, which dries very quickly. This is the first of the Shiraz vineyards to be picked and, being the warmer site, fits perfectly into the Farr Rising line-up. Farr Rising Shiraz shows how refinement and fruit flavour can come together. The fruit is 85 to 90% destemmed before being cooled and placed in the tank for 19 days to ferment naturally. It sees 18 months in French oak (10% new) and is bottled under vacuum.

Specializing in promoting Calabrian wines cultivated from some of the oldest native vines in the world, Cantine Lavorata has expanded its investment in production and vineyards to other localities, including Sicily, cementing their commitment to sharing the rich heritage and exceptional flavours of their land through the art of winemaking. The Cantine Lavorata Anfisya Rosso 2022, bearing the typical geographical indication of Calabria, is a captivating blend of Calabrese, Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera grapes sourced from the southern area of Calabria, overlooking the Ionian Sea, at an elevation of 300-350 meters above sea level in clayey-calcareous soil. The hand-harvested grapes undergo red vinification with cold fermentation, resulting in a visually striking ruby red wine with purple reflections, offering an intense, complex and fine aroma characterized by fruity scents of mulberries, plums, blackcurrants and cherries, complemented by floral notes of tulip, alongside mineral and vegetal nuances. On the palate, it delivers a dry, warm and soft experience, with good freshness, moderate tannins and a well-balanced, full-bodied flavour profile, culminating in an intense, persistent, fine and harmonious development, encapsulating the essence of its geographical origin. Best enjoyed at a serving temperature of 16°C.

Giaconda Nantua Cabernet Sauvignon

Giaconda vineyard was established by Rick Kinzbrunner, a mechanical engineer who became interested in wine in the early 1970's. Rick then spent the next ten years working in the industry, travelling and following his passion for wine. After a brief stint in New Zealand, he studied at Davis University in California and worked at some of the most respected wineries in the Napa and Sonoma Valleys (namely Stag's Leap, Simi and Matanzas Creek). In Europe he worked for the Moueix group in Bordeaux, co-owner of the fabled Chateau Petrus.

Torbreck is a winery on a mission to become one of the world's great wine brands. Since 1994, they have remained committed to creating exceptional Rhone-style red and white wines that reflect the very best vineyards in Australia's famous Barossa region. Torbreck is actually named after the forest near Inverness, Scotland where the winery's founder, David Powell worked as a lumberjack after completing university studies. They use carefully selected 225-litre oak barriques for maturation, known as Dominique Laurent 'Magic Casks'. The oak is personally harvested from Forêt de Tronçais in Allier, and the staves are aged for 48 to 54 months at an exposed location for maximum seasoning. The staves are then hand-made into barrels and heated over three differing flames for several hours, resulting in a gentle toast due to the remarkable density of the wood. Torbreck's winemaking style reflects their commitment to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Barossa region. Penfolds Bin 707

Langton's Classification: Exceptional

Bin 707 is a Cabernet Sauvignon reflection of Grange, intensely-flavoured fruit, completion of fermentation and maturation in new oak, expressing a Penfolds understanding of multi-vineyard, multi-region fruit sourcing. Bin 707 was first vintaged in 1964. The wine was not made from 1970 to 1975 when fruit was directed to other wines, nor in 1981, 1995, 2000, 2003 or 2011 (when fruit of the required style and quality was not available). Full bodied and with proven cellaring potential, Bin 707 retains a secure place among the ranks of Australias finest Cabernets.
