After all, right across Italy Prosecco is the bubbly of choice and as much a part of daily life as gelato or an espresso. This wine is from northern Italy's Alessandro Gallici. He knows every grape grower worth knowing, every premium vineyard, and has spent his life making outstanding wines. We first met him when he was head winemaker at a large winery. Every vintage, he'd impress us, but he was also keen to go out on his own. We were delighted and promised we'd be his first customer. We're still championing his great wines today. His fizz is beautifully fresh and, served chilled, makes a tasty aperitivo.

Brilliant very pale straw colour with a watery hue. Blossoming out of the glass with ample intensity are aromatics of pear, red apple and honeysuckle followed by a whiff of musk. Delicious pear and apple fruits have a fleshy textural feel with subtle honeysuckle, light musk and spice in the background. Finishes dry with crisp acidity and a long well rounded aftertaste. Rowlee’s vineyard was planted over 20 years ago by Nik and Deonne Samodol in the high-elevation (950m) cool climate of Orange. Their daughter, Nicole Samodol, and her partner James Manny ‘combine European wine growing heritage with New World practices. This Chardonnay has subtle lemon and grapefruit citrus with underlying nougat and cashew notes.

It was originally set up to illustrate a new method of irrigation that founder Alberto Zuccardi had invented. Today it is run by the second and third generations – José Alberto Zuccardi, given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering work, as well as the the ‘Legend Winemaker’ prize from Tim Atkin MW, while his son Sebastián, was named Decanter’s Top Winemaker of South America. “Zuccardi keeps going from strength to strength with their top-level wines” wrote Wine Advocate, while Tim Atkin MW declared, “The quality of the wines ... has never been better … great wines, not just of south America, but the world”.
