Domaine Bernard Defaix 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre

Montée de Tonnerre is often regarded as the most complete of the Chablis Premier Crus, and Domaine Bernard Defaix has a long-standing reputation for producing serious, age-worthy wines from this site. Located just east of the Grands Crus, the vineyard shares a similar exposure and Kimmeridgian soils, giving wines of depth and line. The Defaix family has farmed organically here since 2009. Fermentation and maturation occur in a blend of stainless steel and older oak, imparting structure without overt wood influence. Each year, the wine exhibits a clear saline line, with notes of citrus, fennel, and oyster shell on the nose, followed by a mouthful of white stone fruit, a mineral cut, and a long, tapering finish. It opens up well with time in bottle and comfortably rewards cellaring. For those who prize Chablis with both detail and drive, this is a benchmark example of the style and the Montée de Tonnerre vineyard.

Houghton Evolution 37 Chenin Blanc

Houghton made wine for 101 years before Jack Mann created the iconic, and incredibly influential, White Burgundy in 1937. In 2023, more than 80 years on, Houghton honoured this history with the release of this exquisite old vine chenin blanc from Margaret River. With a foot in the past and an eye on the future, EV/37 represents chenin blanc at its best—vibrant, delicate, layered, textural.

Dalrymple Vineyards Single Site Estate Coal River Valley Chardonnay

2022 brought with it the first vintage release of Dalrymple’s Single Site Coal River Valley Chardonnay. The well protected, south-east facing block is shaded during hotter parts of the day, which helps keep the crop cool, and allows for a long ripening period that builds higher natural acidity. The handpicked fruit is whole bunch pressed with the free run juice and pressings kept separate. Once settled, the juice is fermented, in French oak puncheons and ceramic eggs, then lees stirring is employed twice weekly for three months until malolactic fermentation is all but complete. Dalrymple’s Single Site Coal River Valley Chardonnay is characterised by grapefruit, citrus, white peach and quince, with hints of bushland aromatics, and a flinty finish with a saline and seashell edge.

Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau Vin De France XXI

The 2021 Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau Vin De France XXI is one-off wine from a challenging vintage. This unique blend, the only wine produced by Dagueneau from the 2021 harvest, brings together parcels usually destined for Pur Sang, Buisson-Renard, Les Monts-Damnés, and Silex, with a touch from the legendary Clos du Calvaire. The result is a racy, vibrant wine with cool fruit and the signature rapier-like intensity that this Domaine is known for. Aged on lees for 10 months in a variety of oak vessels, this wine is immediately captivating with its citrus, fresh herbs, and characteristic salty, chalky minerality. The texture is compact and svelte, reminiscent of Dagueneau's earlier vintages before the climate began to warm. Despite the vintage’s challenges, including a significant crop loss and high levels of rot, the 2021 XXI is a compelling drink. Its bracing freshness and mineral complexity make it a fascinating interpretation of the vintage. Whether you're a longtime fan of Dagueneau or new to his wines, this is a great way to get to know this renowned producer. Just a handful of bottles available. 94 points"After a solar vintage with exotic notes in 2020, which is in top form today, 2021 returns to a fresher balance, with noble herbal notes that have become rare in recent years. Nevertheless, this XXI draws on an extremely tasty richness, well nourished by meticulous wood aging (barrels, demi-muids). A delicate texture, supported by beautiful bitters. Patience [required]. As usual, this Sauvignon will be very restrained in its youth. It will need five to six years to relax and loosen up. No doubt, it will evolve serenely for more than fifteen years."- Rebecca Gibb MW (Vinous)
